Match No.860
Referee: Paul Norton
Venue: Hydes Road

"Barley’s first competitive match of 2011 was a daunting trip to Hydes Road Playing Fields where they took on league leaders Coach and Horses. In the league, the leaders are brushing everyone aside and look odds on to win the title. Barley will be hoping that they start off better than last week, conceding 5 in the opening half hour against the Barley Mow Wanderers Afternoon side. However, second half they dominated and will be hoping that form continues.
With Nathan Spear, Richie Porter, Nick O’Brien, Stephen Evans and Chris Hales unavailable, the Barley management team had to ring the changes from last week. Experienced playmaker Stephen Bradnick started on the left wing for the first time in a Barley shirt. Jason Jackson, confident after his two goals last week, partners ‘target man’ Kirk Cadden in an exciting new combination up front. Chris Hoult and Matt Westbury come into to the team at right and left back.
The match kicked off and despite the chilly conditions and icy pitch, Barley started the brighter. 2minutes in Kirk Cadden latched onto a through ball and drove into the area. He smashed the ball under the keeper but his joy was short lived with his effort being ruled offside. Barley carried on the pressure with Kirk again going close 1minute after. He controlled a pass from Chris Hoult, turned his man, but fired agonisingly wide. However, with Barley attacking, Coach and Horses showed why they where top of the league by scoring a goal with their first shot 5minutes in. A long ball was not dealt with and the Coach striker slotted home from a tight angle 10yards out. This goal gave the hosts confidence and set camp in the Barley half for the next 40minutes. However, Barley threw their heads, feet and bodies at the Coach efforts to keep the score at 1-0. Lee Clark also made a great save, finger tipping the ball wide after it looked to be heading into the top corner.
The second half started as the first finished with Coach having all the efforts but Barley carried on frustrating. Lee Clark was again on hand to make two superb saves which where more or less identical, tipping the shots wide when the ball was sailing into the bottom corner. Coach then doubled their lead on the 57th minute with the goal having more than a bit of luck to it. The Coach striker got behind the Barley back line after a long throw, in a congested penalty area. He fired a shot from a tight angle at Lee who saved with his feet. The deflection hit Darren Wollaston from point blank range, hit the far post and tricked over the line. 10minutes later Coach made it three, again from a long throw and again controversially. The ball bounced in the penalty area with right back Chris Hoult swinging a boot at the ball. The tricky Coach striker pulled him back, latched onto the ball and smashed home. Barleys appeals for a foul where failing to impress the referee who let the goal stand. Barley threw on Adam Kennedy and Donny Shinn and the two nearly made a goal. Adam won flick on following a throw in and Donny charged into the area. He thundered a goal bound shot which the keeper tipped over. From the resulting corner, Jason Jackson swung in a deep cross which clipped the angle of the post and bounced out.
The full time whistle went with Barley going down 3-0 to the league leaders. Today was an immense performance by all involved. Lee Clark made some top draw saves and it was the best back four performance for some time. The midfield battled away all game with special mention going to wingers Stephen Bradnick and Mark Hill who helped their full back through out. Up front it was cold lonely morning with the team being backs to the wall for 90percent of the game. But our strikers stayed alert, worked hard and did their up most to stay threatening when they had the ball.
Although we suffered a defeat the management team are proud of everyone who crossed that white line today. Well done. "
