Chaseside Wanderers – 5

Ferndown Forest – 0

After winning the last two games in the cup Chaseside needed a win to get the league campaign underway after a few poor results early on in the season. Chaseside were forced to make a few changes and welcomed debutants Danny Davey and Craig Newey for their full appearances in the first team. This paid off as in within the first 10 minutes Chaseside were 1 up. Some fine work from the every reliable Matt Hicks slotted a perfect through ball past the defenders for Danny to run onto who took one touch before dispatching the ball in the corner of the net with his left foot. From kick off a free kick was awarded and Karl Gostling stepped up to float the ball into the box which was met by Danny again who looped a header into the top corner to make it 2-0. This seemed to kick start Ferndown into life and they started to pass the ball around with more authority, however their tactics seemed to consist of getting the ball out to the wings as fast as they could which more or less every time was cut out easily by the Chaseside back three. Chaseside pressed and were playing the better football and could have scored a few more before half time but unfortunately could not capitalise on the opportunities so the half ended 2-0.

A change was made at half time with Captain Chris Bryant coming off and Dave Roger making a rare appearance taking his place! As Chaseside lost the toss they were forced to play into the wind in the second half which made the Ferndown hoof the ball tactic a little more dangerous but with the defence and Steve aware it did not cause too many issues. After a rare piece of good football down the right hand side by Ferndown the defence was split and only a great save by Steve Dunford kept the scores at 2-0. This was probably the changing point in the game and the wake up call Chaseside needed. After some great work down the left, Matt Hicks (Hicksio as he now likes to be called!) got to the ball just before the keeper who bought him down and KG stepped up to slot the ball into the bottom corner (that’s 2 in 2 now!). Ferndown now started to argue between themselves at the back and a few heads went down which Chaseside sensed and started playing some great football around them. After Jason Reed was unlucky to see his cross/shot come back of the bar the ball was cleared and Dean Norman after landing in the net was carted off to hospital with a suspected dislocated shoulder. Graham came on to make his First team debut in which he slotted in at the back and did well at breaking up the Ferndown attacks. Danny then picked up a loose ball and squared it to the industrious Hicksio who took a touch and smashed it goalwards which took a deflection, wrongfooted the keeper and nestled in the corner of the net to make it 4-0. Soon after it was 5 when Craig Newey played Danny in who took a couple of touches before smashing the ball into the goal with his left foot. (3 goals and an assist on his debut, not bad!). After some late pressure by Ferndown, Chaseside were forced to change formation to 4-4-2 which just tightened everything up and the final whistle soon went.

5 goals and the first clean sheet of the season should give Chaseside the confidence to push on and move up the table, however next week back to the cup and as were only playing the current Premier league champions and cup holders should be a nice easy one!
