Away cup match played on 12 October 2008.
Kicked off at 10:30 AM

With these two sides meeting for the second time in three weeks this was always going to be a tight encounter in the Ken Baker Cup. In bright and sunny conditions it was Elmer who took early command and just as in the previous meeting raced to a two goal advantage. Herbert opened the scoring on 20 minutes following a fine delivery of a corner from MacIver, hard won by Gillingham. It was Herbert who was again involved in the 31st minute when earning a free-kick that was excellently struck into the net from MacIver keeping him at the top of the club leading goalscorer list. The fact that Elmer held onto the two goal advantage was down to Kent who managed to snuff out a clear opening for the hosts on 35 minutes.

Half-time: LG United 0 Elmer FC 2

The second half began with LG having made some tactical changes and substitutions and causing problems for the Elmer defence with Hurley being called into meaningful action for the first time in the match. It was then somewhat against the run of play that the ball found its way into the LG net again from a fine header by MacIver. Elmer's delight was though shortlived as the LG linesman managed to spot an infringement leading the referee Mr. Kimber to disallow it. No doubt stirred by their good fortune LG did exactly what had done two weeks earlier around the hour mark and scored two swift goals through Stanbridge and Cox to tie the match up at 2-2. Seeing the match slip away from his team the Elmer manager made two bold changes with Hambidge and Davis replacing Gillingham and Belcher on 65 minutes. What a decision that looked like being with Hambidge firng Elmer ahead again just three minutes after entering the action. This time around though LG United were not prepared to let the match slip away and were back on terms in the 73rd minute with substitute Stanbridge again hitting the target. The final spell of normal time saw a number of chances created for both sides, but it was Elmer who were most guilty of not finishing the match off without the need of an extra 30 minutes with Herbert being the most benevolent.

Full-time: LG United 3 Elmer FC 3

With the famous quote of Sir Alf Ramsey "You've won it once, go win it again!"  ringing in their ears Elmer started  the extra period in fine style and on 94 minutes a fine strike by Herbert was well saved by the much improved Chant in the LG goal. With both sides tensing up LG managed to spring the Elmer defence which had been re-arranged following the substitution of Spann  by Bann. A fine finish from the pacey Cox saw LG go ahead for the first time in the tie, indeed they could well have repeated that very trick had it not been for some fine committed work from the evergreen O'Donnell. That effort seemed to have been rewarded on 103 minutes when some long overdue cool finishing by Hambidge saw the game tied up yet again, this time at 4-4.  The remainder of extra time continued to see numerous chances be created but no further scoring occurred which ultimately meant the tie having to be decided by the lottery of penalties.

After extra time: LG United 4 Elmer FC 4

A, now proved to be legal, change of goalkeeper by LG saw Belcher take the gloves from Chant and a woeful display of the art of striking the ball from 12 yards saw Elmer defeated 1-3 from the spot with the old time opportunity now of "concentrating on the League!"
