Gikuni United FC hosted RYSA FC in a tightly contested league encounter at Kirangari Youth Polytechnic on 15 March 2026, with kick-off at 3:00pm. The home side secured a narrow 1-0 victory thanks to a first-half goal, maintaining their strong home form in this 11-a-side fixture.

Gikuni United lined up in a 4-1-4-1 formation, deploying Dylan Oduor in goal. The defensive line consisted of Kanyua Mukuria at right back, John Nduati and Michael Njau as central defenders, and Shadrack Kigen on the left. Paul Ochieng operated as the holding central midfielder, shielding the back four. Ahead of him, four attacking midfielders took up positions: Stephen Kinyanjui on the right, Brian Orenge and Ezra Mutai centrally, and Stephen Masakari on the left. Maxwell Gikaru led the line as the lone striker. The substitutes available were Willis Suju (GK), Joseph Nucho, Geoffrey Karanja, Brinton Oino, and Brian Njagi.

The match’s decisive moment came in the 36th minute when Stephen Kinyanjui capitalised on a loose ball inside the box to slot home a simple tap-in, giving Gikuni United the lead. Stephen Masakari's dangerous freekick had been spilled by the RYSA goalkeeper and fallen kindly in the path of an extremely alert Chuie, who was first to get to the ball and slot it in from point blank range.

Masakari would then crush another freekick off the top left corner of the RYSA goal post for a narrow escape for the visitors.

Shortly after the breakthrough, central defender John Nduati was booked for unsporting behaviour in the 39th minute, a caution that would soon force tactical changes

The interval drew close with Gikuni United holding a slender advantage, having controlled much of the midfield but facing persistent pressure from RYSA FC’s forwards.

Joseph Nucho came in at halftime to replace the cautioned Nduati. This adjustment aimed to maintain defensive solidity heading into the break.

The home side’s 4-1-4-1 setup demanded discipline from the midfield quartet and the lone striker to press and disrupt the visitors’ rhythm, a role that Maxwell played with near-perfection.

Early in the second half, Gikuni United made a double tactical substitution in the 58th minute. Geoffrey Karanja came on for the influential right attacking midfielder Stephen Kinyanjui, who had opened the scoring, while Brian Njagi replaced central attacking midfielder Ezra Mutai. These changes sought to refresh the attacking impetus and maintain the team’s edge.

Despite the substitutions, the match remained tight with both sides striving to hit the back of each other's net. Gikuni United’s defence, marshalled effectively by Michael Njau and the tireless Shadrack Kigen on the left, held firm against RYSA FC’s advances. Kigen’s performance was particularly noteworthy, earning him the player of the match accolade for his defensive resilience and support going forward.

In the 83rd minute, goalkeeper Dylan Oduor received a yellow card for what the referee judged as time wasting antics, adding a note of tension as the match neared its conclusion.

Nevertheless, the home side’s defensive organisation and game management ensured they preserved their clean sheet.

The final whistle confirmed a 1-0 victory for Gikuni United FC, a result that reflected their disciplined approach and effective use of the 4-1-4-1 formation. The tactical substitutions and solid defensive work were key factors in securing the three points on a competitive afternoon at Kirangari Youth Polytechnic.

The team know focuses on a tricky assignment away to South C Rangers in the final match of the first leg.
