Gikuni United FC travelled to the MOW South C Grounds on 22 March 2026 for their Div II away fixture against South C Rangers, kicking off at 3:20pm. The visitors emerged dominant with a comprehensive 3-0 win, shutting out the home side and taking all three points in a commanding display of defensive discipline and attacking intent.

Gikuni United lined up in a 4-1-4-1 formation, designed to provide defensive solidity with a lone holding midfielder shielding the back four, while allowing an attack-minded four to support a lone-striker upfront. Dylan Oduor took his place between the sticks, with Kanyua Mukuria and Shadrack Kigen operating as right and left defenders respectively. The central defensive partnership was formed by Michael Njau and John Nduati.

Paul Ochieng anchored the midfield in the holding role, tasked with breaking up play and distributing the ball into attack. Ahead of him, Geoffrey Karanja occupied the right attacking midfield position, Brian and Ezra Mutai played centrally as attacking midfielders, and Stephen Masakari took up the left attacking midfield berth. Maxwell Gikaru led the line as the lone striker.

On the bench, Gikuni United had Njagi, Ogamba, Kinyanjui, and Brinton Oino ready to come on when needed. Willis Suju provided an alternate pair of hands as the reserve goalkeeper.

The first half saw Gikuni United probe the South C Rangers' defense severally, with the best chance of the half falling to Masakari whose shot on goal in the 22nd minute whisked past the left upright.

However, despite their pressure, the half ended goalless at 45 minutes, with both sides locked in a tactical battle - Gikuni with passing combinations while South C opted for long direct balls that won them 5 corner kicks.

Immediately after the break, Gikuni United made a tactical substitution, replacing striker Maxwell Gikaru with Brian Njagi to inject fresh energy into the attack. This change paid instant dividends as Njagi scored just two minutes later in the 48th minute. Receiving a long pass from Ezra Mutai, Njagi expertly finished with his right foot, after claver play to draw his defender out of position and dribbling past the South C goalkeeper, capitalising on a well-worked team move to break the deadlock.

Gikuni then doubled their advantage in the 57th minute courtesy of an own goal by a South C Rangers player, further unsettling the hosts. The goal came from a another long pass that was directed to Masakari, whose presence sent the South C defender and goalkeeper in a panic that resulted in the goal.

With a 2 goal cushion, Gikuni United was patient in defence and composed in attack, allowing the Kabete team to take full charge of the tie. GU soon extended their lead in the 67th minute when Paul Ochieng rose highest to head home from a corner delivered by Masakari. This goal showcased the visitors’ set-piece threat and Ochieng’s aerial prowess from his central midfield position.

The visitors maintained control, though, despite a yellow card shown to Ezra Mutai in the 73rd minute for what the referee judged as timewasting.

As the match progressed into the final quarter, Gikuni United made a triple substitution in the 81st minute to maintain their dominance and manage player fitness. Benson Ogamba, Stephen Kinyanjui and Brinton Oino took over the final 10 minutes of the game, with the sole task of securing the lead and building onto the momentum.

John Nduati had a late attempt on goal in the 83rd minute, but his effort went narrowly wide.

In the closing stages, Brinton Oino came close to scoring, twice testing the South C Rangers goalkeeper with a shot in the 88th and 92nd minutes. Brian Njagi almost doubled his tally with his lob kindly falling for the South C goalkeeper.

The match concluded with Gikuni United comfortably seeing out the remainder of the game to secure a clean sheet and a valuable three points on the road, a much-needed result to build on last weekend's narrow win against RYSA FC.

This victory at MOW South C Grounds highlighted Gikuni United’s improving tactical discipline and clinical finishing, with key contributions from substitutes and starters alike, punctuating the first leg with a dominant performance and convincing win.
