Gikuni United FC hosted Nairobi Prisons at Kirangari Youth Polytechnic on 19 April 2026, kicking off at 3:40pm in a crucial league encounter. The home side secured a narrow 1-0 victory after 90 minutes of intense football, courtesy of a spectacular long-range free-kick from Paul Ochieng.

Gikuni United lined up in a 4-1-4-1 formation, deploying Dylan Oduor in goal to marshal the defence. The back four consisted of Kanyua Mukuria at right back, Michael Njau and Joseph Nucho as central defenders, and Shadrack Kigen on the left. Paul Ochieng operated as the lone holding midfielder, tasked with shielding the defence and distributing the ball forward. Ahead of him, the midfield quartet that featured Geoffrey Karanja and Stephen Masakari on the wings. Leading the line was striker Brian Njagi, expected to spearhead the attack and convert chances created by the midfield. Maxwell Gikaru, John Nduati, Martin Muchui, Benson Ndege, James Njung'e and Stephen Kinyanjui started on the bench. John Maina also returned after recovering from the fracture that kept him out for the entire first half of the season.

From the outset, Gikuni United showed intent to dominate possession and create openings. Within three minutes, Stephen Masakari delivered a key pass that carved open the Nairobi Prisons defence, setting up an early chance. The visitors’ goalkeeper was called into action repeatedly, notably denying Brian Njagi’s efforts at the 14th and 18th minutes, both well-timed saves that kept the scoreline level.

Left back Shadrack Kigen also tested the opposition keeper with a shot saved at the 39th minute, while Njagi’s attempt just before half-time sailed high over the bar. Despite these efforts, the first half ended goalless, with both sides locked in a tactical battle.

The second half began with a slight increase in physicality, as Michael Njau was called out for a trip in the 47th minute. Just two minutes later, Brian Njagi faced a crucial moment when he missed a penalty, firing high over the crossbar and missing a golden opportunity to put Gikuni ahead.

Despite the setback, Njagi continued to press, forcing another save at the 63rd minute. In response to the game’s ebb and flow, Gikuni United made a tactical substitution at the 66th minute, bringing on Maxwell Gikaru for Geoffrey Karanja. Eight minutes later John Maina and Benson Ndege joined the fray in a double substitution to inject fresh energy into the right flank and dominate the midfield.

Gikuni's breakthrough finally came in the 72nd minute when Paul Ochieng stepped up to deliver a stunning direct free-kick from long range. His right-footed strike flew past the wall and goalkeeper, nestling into the net and sending the home crowd into raptures, thanks to a slight deflection off the red Prison's wall.

From that point on, Gikuni United focused on maintaining their slender lead, with disciplined defending and looking to catch the now advancing Nairobi Prisons on the counter attack. The visitors pushed forward in search of an equaliser but were unable to breach the home side’s organised backline.

Gikuni United’s victory was built on solid defensive work, midfield creativity, and a moment of individual brilliance from Paul Ochieng. The 4-1-4-1 formation allowed them to control the midfield and create chances, while the defensive quartet and goalkeeper Dylan Oduor ensured yet another clean sheet.

This result boosts Gikuni United’s league campaign as they continue to build momentum after the 3-0 rout of South C Rangers. Nairobi Prisons' will be frustrated as they look to rise from the wrong end of the table.
