Match report v Leigh fusion (h) 19.1.14

Magnificent 7 at Brunswick Park!

Previously unbeaten Leigh Fusion were the visitors to Brunswick Park in this Wigan league match and met with an unstoppable Sharks outfit, that ran riot, inflicting a 7-2 thrashing on their opponents.  Other than the visitors’ early goal and a second Fusion strike, that was marvellously saved by lively goalkeeper James B, this match was completely controlled and dominated by the fired up Sharks.

Robert M set the tone for the morning, when he set off from his own goal area on a lightning 80 metre run, leaving defenders in his wake, to slot the ball past the Fusion goalkeeper, to put sharks level on 26 mins.   A Kian L corner on 35 mins found the reliable head of Harrison D, when he rose like a salmon above the Fusion defenders to powerfully head in and put the Sharks 2-1 up.  It took only 7 mins of the 2nd half for the Sharks extend their lead further when Robbie B, who was a real handful for Fusion defenders all morning, thrashed a left foot drive into the Fusion bottom corner.  Robbie B then grabbed himself a second and the Sharks 4th on 51 mins with a sublime volley.

With the Sharks in complete control, they began turn the screw with some fine football.  Chris L terrorised the left flank with his telling runs, Alex M twisted, turned and tormented the Fusion midfield, whilst captain fantastic Liam D, aided superbly by Robert M, Joel F & Antony W, cancelled out any threat of a Fusion attack, time after time.  Kian L and Declan C pulled the midfield strings, Declan's trickery and skill teased Fusion throughout the game, and he was unlucky himself not to be on the scoresheet, as he saw several of his long range efforts kept out by the Fusion keeper.

Live wire Rhys L was next on the score sheet, with arguably the goal of the game - an absolute 'worldie' on 54 mins, that saw him sweetly lob the Fusion goalkeeper from 35 yards out.  Kian L was next to join the goal parade 2 minutes later, when he pounced on a loose ball on the edge of the Fusion area to slam home the Sharks 6th.  Thomas C was then unlucky not to put the Sharks further in front,  when his right foot effort went agonisingly wide.  Robbie B then claimed his hat trick on 64 mins when he rammed home the Sharks 7th, from an all most impossible scoring angle.

A rare Fusion attack was stopped completely in its tracks when midfielder Jack F intercepted the Fusion through ball.  However, Fusion did claim a late cancellation goal 3 mins from time despite the gallant defensive effort from Daniel R.

This was perhaps the performance of an incredible season for the Sharks, as they continue get better & better, lifting the bar higher & higher with every game they play.  Had this been a boxing match, the referee would have had no alternative but to stop the contest to prevent helpless visitors from receiving any further punishment.

After the game, Sharks team manager Eamon Cuthbert beamed "we had 100% commitment in every challenge, we did not give Fusion time to play their game....."

This incredible win now means the league title is now in the very own hands of the Hindley Sharks, and with the commitment and desire these 15 players are now showing, who'd be crazy enough to bet against them.

Well done boys...you’re truly awesome!!!!
