Horsham 1881 travelled to Eastbourne Sports Park on 27 September 2026 for a league away fixture against Hampden Park First. The big news for this one was that the 30 man strong squad that had been assembled registered 7 available just under a week ago, and whilst a 14 strong squad made the trip, Horsham were missing some key players and most notably in goal where it seems the goalkeepers union had decided that no-one could play Sunday for Horsham. In the end Luke Erricker reluctantly donned the gloves in this first appearance in goal in some 10+ years. So there was no denying it, Horsham knew they were up against it.

Horsham 1881 lined up in a more solid 4-5-1 formation, aiming to balance midfield control with defensive solidity and lone striker support. The back four remained the same with Damian Carter at right back, Darren Jestico and Jordan Johal as central defenders, and Amaury Alejandro Toloza Lara on the left flank. The midfield five featured Daniel Cannons on the right, Charlie Horrill, Harry Maynard, and Oliver Parsons centrally, and Daniel Long on the left, tasked with both defensive duties and providing width. Up front, Pete Monniot led the line as the sole striker, expected to hold up play and capitalise on chances created. On the bench, new signing Mark Lambert, Ashley Iles, and Max Lavender-Brown awaited their opportunity to influence the game.

The match began disastrously for Horsham 1881 as Hampden Park First struck twice within the opening five minutes, setting the tone for a dominant display, their front 2 causing no end of problems. The visitors’ defence breached early on, conceding in the 2nd and 5th minutes, leaving them chasing the game from the outset. Despite efforts to regroup, Hampden Park continued to press, their pace undoing the Horsham defense and adding further goals in the 20th and 30th minutes, compounding Horsham’s woes. Horsham were not without their chances as the Hampden Park defense also struggled with pace. Cannons, Monniot and Johal all going close but also finding their keeper in good form.

At the half-hour mark, Horsham 1881 made their first change with Mark Lambert replacing Amaury Alejandro Toloza Lara at left back who was finding himself overrun on the left hand side. Yet, Hampden Park showed no signs of easing their grip, scoring again in the 37th and 43rd minutes to take a commanding 6-0 lead before the break.

The first half closed with Hampden Park firmly in control, and Horsham 1881 facing a daunting task in the second period. At half time, Daniel Long was substituted for Ashley Iles, signalling a tactical adjustment on the left side of midfield. The visitors’ struggles continued as Hampden Park added a seventh goal in the 54th minute, extending their lead further.

Horsham 1881 responded with another substitution in the 59th minute, bringing on Max Lavender-Brown for Damian Carter at right back, likely an attempt to inject fresh energy. The visitors finally found a moment of respite in the 68th minute when Pete Monniot netted Horsham’s solitary goal, breaking the shutout and offering a glimmer of hope amid a difficult afternoon.

However, Hampden Park quickly reasserted their dominance, scoring again in the 74th minute. Horsham 1881 made a flurry of changes shortly after, with Damian Carter returning to replace Darren Jestico in central defence, and Daniel Long reintroduced for Charlie Horrill in midfield. Further adjustments followed in the 80th minute as Charlie Horrill came back on for Harry Maynard, reflecting a reshuffle in midfield personnel.

Despite these efforts, Hampden Park sealed their emphatic victory with a ninth goal in the 89th minute, rounding off a comprehensive win. Horsham 1881 were left to reflect on a tough day at Eastbourne Sports Park, where their defensive frailties were ruthlessly exposed and their attacking opportunities limited.

In summary, Horsham 1881’s 4-5-1 formation and personnel were unable to withstand Hampden Park's relentless pressure and clinical finishing. The early goals set the tone for a one-sided encounter, and despite some tactical changes and a late consolation strike from Pete Monniot, the visitors suffered a heavy defeat on the road.

We look forward to the return fixture where hopefully a goalkeeper and other first team players return.
