Maidstone United KYL U14 travelled to Phoenix Sports Club on 15 February 2026 for a 10:30am kick-off in a league away fixture that saw them emerge victorious with a 2-1 scoreline after 70 minutes of intense football. The match was contested in the traditional 11-a-side format, with Maidstone United KYL U14 deploying a 4-1-2-3 formation designed to balance defensive solidity with attacking flair.
Maidstone lined up with Harvey Rostron in goal, protected by a back four consisting of Liam Rich at right defender, central defenders Captain Eddie Ambrose and Danny Lowe, and Tommy Monaghan on the left. Bertie Hayward operated as the lone holding midfielder, tasked with shielding the defence and recycling possession. Ahead of him, the midfield was bolstered by Tosan Okomi on the right attacking midfield and Tank Evans on the left attacking midfield, both expected to link play and support the front three. The forward line featured Sawyer Booth on the right, Zaph Kouassi as the central striker, and Max Carney on the left, all charged with stretching the opposition defence and creating goal-scoring opportunities. On the bench, Maidstone had Harrison Smith, Blake Vince, and Zane Clements ready to make an impact if called upon. Bernie Farley and Rylee Rodger’s were missed today, so we look forward to welcoming them back at the next fixture. Ollie Higginson joined the coaching staff in the technical area to support the mighty Stones.
The game began with Phoenix Sports taking an early lead inside the third minute, catching Maidstone off guard. However, the Maidstone defence quickly rallied, with Eddie Ambrose making a crucial tackle in the same minute to stem the threat. The early exchanges were frantic, with Tosan Okomi intercepting a pass in the fourth minute, Liam Rich clearing danger, and Max Carney executing a vital tackle to regain possession. Sawyer Booth tested the opposition goalkeeper with a shot saved in the fifth minute, while Harvey Rostron was alert to clear danger moments later.
Maidstone’s attacking intent was evident as Max Carney flicked a key pass in the sixth minute, followed by Tosan Okomi’s headed defensive clearance. Eddie Ambrose continued to impress with a well-timed tackle in the seventh minute, and Liam Rich was dominant in aerial duels, winning headers in the eighth minute to quell Phoenix Sports’ advances. The defence remained resolute with tackles from Tank Evans, Ambrose clearing the ball and Tommy Monaghan intercepting a threatening move.
Sawyer Booth’s slide rule pass in the tenth minute carved open space, with Zaph Kouassi intercepting to maintain pressure. Liam Rich’s slide rule pass in the eleventh minute and subsequent headers and tackles throughout the early stages underlined his importance in both defence and attack. Bertie Hayward contributed defensively with a crucial header in the twelfth minute, though he was later booked for a foul in the twenty-sixth minute.
The defensive discipline of Maidstone was on full display as Liam Rich and Eddie Ambrose repeatedly thwarted Phoenix Sports’ attempts through headers, tackles, and clearances between minutes eight and thirty-one. Danny Lowe and Tommy Monaghan also played pivotal roles, with Lowe’s long pass in the twenty-third minute and Monaghan’s interceptions and headers helping to maintain control.
Despite several saved attempts from Zaph Kouassi and Max Carney, Maidstone’s persistence paid off shortly after the half-time break. Max Carney, assisted by Zane Clements with a short pass inside the box, found the net in the fifty-second minute to level the score. This goal was a testament to Maidstone’s attacking cohesion and ability to capitalise on chances.
The second half saw Maidstone make three substitutions in quick succession around the forty-first and forty-second minutes, with Harrison Smith, Blake Vince, and Zane Clements replacing Tank Evans, Tommy Monaghan, and Bertie Hayward respectively. These changes injected fresh energy into the side, with Smith and Vince immediately involved in key defensive actions and passes.
Maidstone continued to press, with Liam Rich delivering several incisive long passes and flicks between minutes fifty-four and fifty-seven, while Harvey Rostron made crucial saves and clearances to keep the scoreline level. Defensive efforts with tackles and clearances from Blake Vince and Danny Lowe further frustrated Phoenix Sports’ attempts to regain the lead.
Tank Evans returned to the field in the sixty-second minute, replacing Tosan Okomi, and soon after, Zaph Kouassi provided a slide rule pass that set up another attacking opportunity. Eddie Ambrose and Liam Rich remained steadfast in defence, executing tackles and interceptions to maintain Maidstone’s advantage.
The decisive moment arrived in the sixty-sixth minute when Harrison Smith, assisted by Zaph Kouassi, scored inside the box with a left-footed finish following a short pass. This goal put Maidstone ahead 2-1 and ultimately secured the win.
In the closing stages, Tommy Monaghan was instrumental in defence, making crucial tackles and blocks to deny Phoenix Sports any chance of an equaliser. His consistent defensive displays earned him the player of the match accolade.
Maidstone United KYL U14’s disciplined defensive structure, combined with timely attacking contributions and effective substitutions, ensured they overcame an early setback to claim a hard-fought 2-1 victory on the road at Phoenix Sports Club.
