Mathare United Women FC travelled to MTG Grounds, Mnarani, on 25 April 2026 for a 1:00pm kick-off in a crucial league away fixture against MTG United. The visitors emerged victorious with a 2-0 win, a result that underlined their tactical discipline and clinical finishing over the 90 minutes plus added time.

Mathare United Women lined up in a 4-4-1-1 formation, deploying Valentine Khwaka in goal to marshal the defence. The back four consisted of Dora Achieng at right back, Marline Atieno and Nestley Nanjala as central defenders, and Brenda Atieno on the left flank. In midfield, Iddah Adhiambo took up the right midfield role, with Seline Achieng and Sharon Juma operating centrally, and Faith Atieno on the left. Just ahead of the midfield line, Jerrine Adhiambo played as an attacking midfielder supporting lone striker Sylvia Otieno. This setup was designed to provide defensive solidity with four at the back, width and creativity from the midfield four, and a focal point in attack.

The match began with both sides probing cautiously, but it was Mathare United Women who gradually asserted control through their midfield engine. The first half ended with the scoreline still goalless, but the visitors had laid the groundwork for a breakthrough.

Just before the interval, Mathare United Women struck the opener. Faith Atieno, operating on the left midfield, delivered a precise cross into the box where Iddah Adhiambo was perfectly positioned to convert from close range. The timing of the goal, right on 45 minutes, was a significant psychological blow to MTG United as the teams headed into the break.

At half-time, a tactical substitution was made by Mathare United Women with Mitshel Waithera replacing Seline Achieng in central midfield to inject fresh energy and maintain control in the middle of the park.

The second half saw further tactical adjustments. At 62 minutes, Melissa Akinyi came on for Faith Atieno on the left midfield, signalling a shift in attacking impetus down that flank. Six minutes later, Judith Atieno replaced Jerrine Adhiambo in the attacking midfield role, aiming to sustain the creative spark behind the striker.

The visitors’ striker, Sylvia Otieno, was shown a yellow card at 70 minutes for persistent infringements, a sign of her combative approach to unsettling the MTG defence.

Mathare United Women doubled their lead at 79 minutes when substitute Mitshel Waithera finished expertly from close range with her right foot after a short pass from Judith Atieno. This goal effectively sealed the contest and demonstrated the impact of the tactical substitutions made earlier.

Further changes followed swiftly with Wilkister Simiyu replacing right back Dora Achieng at 80 minutes, and Beverlyne Awuor coming on for the booked Sylvia Otieno five minutes later. These moves were designed to shore up the defence and preserve the lead.

Mathare United Women’s disciplined defensive display and effective use of substitutions ensured they maintained their clean sheet and secured all three points on the road.

Sharon Juma was named player of the match for her influential role in central midfield, orchestrating play and providing stability throughout the encounter.

This victory at MTG Grounds will boost Mathare United Women’s confidence as they continue their league campaign, demonstrating their ability to execute tactical plans and finish chances clinically away from home.
