Mathare United Women FC hosted Vihiga Queens FC at Kasarani Annex on 19 September 2026, kicking off at 12:00pm in a keenly contested league fixture. The home side emerged victorious with a 3-1 scoreline after 90 minutes of intense football.
Mathare United Women lined up in a classic 4-3-3 formation, deploying Olive Otwaro in goal to marshal the defence. The back four consisted of Veronica Nyambura at right back, Marline Atieno and Immaculate Wangira as central defenders, and Wincate Kaari on the left flank. In midfield, Sharon Juma occupied the central role, flanked by Jerrine Adhiambo on the right and Sylvia Otieno on the left, tasked with both defensive cover and creative support. Up front, the attacking trio featured Iddah Adhiambo on the right wing, Judith Atieno leading the line as striker, and Shalin Otieno on the left wing.
The match began with Vihiga Queens taking an early lead in the 20th minute through a spectacular long-range strike from outside the box, fired with the right foot that left the home goalkeeper with little chance. However, Mathare United responded swiftly just two minutes later when Sylvia Otieno volleyed home a stunning effort from outside the box, expertly assisted by a flick from Iddah Adhiambo. This quick reply restored parity and set the tone for a fiercely competitive first half.
As the half progressed, both sides battled hard but failed to add to the scoreline, and the teams went into the break level at 1-1. At half time, tactical adjustments were made by Mathare United, with Mitshel Waithera replacing Shalin Otieno immediately after the restart to inject fresh energy into the left forward position.
The second half saw Mathare United take control, and their dominance was rewarded in the 62nd minute when Mitshel Waithera scored her first goal of the match. She capitalised on a precise long pass from right midfielder Jerrine Adhiambo, finishing confidently inside the box with her right foot to put the hosts ahead.
Shortly after, Mathare United made a triple substitution at the 66th minute mark, bringing on Faith Atieno, Gladwell Musungu, and Clotilda Auma for Iddah Adhiambo, Sharon Juma, and Judith Atieno respectively. These tactical changes aimed to maintain the team’s momentum and defensive solidity.
With the game still finely poised, Seline Achieng was introduced for Sylvia Otieno in the 83rd minute, further shoring up the midfield and adding fresh legs to the left side.
Mathare United sealed their victory in the 88th minute when Mitshel Waithera struck again, this time with a delicate lob finish following a short pass from Jerrine Adhiambo. The goal underlined the excellent understanding between the two players and effectively ended any hopes of a Vihiga Queens comeback.
Jerrine Adhiambo’s influence throughout the match was undeniable, providing two assists and driving the team forward from her right midfield position, earning her the player of the match accolade.
Mathare United Women FC’s 4-3-3 formation proved effective, with the full-backs and midfielders supporting both defence and attack, while the front three combined well to create and convert chances. The tactical substitutions after half-time helped maintain intensity and ultimately secured a well-deserved three points on home soil.
