Monkton Phoenix went into their Cup Semi Final brimming with confidence on the back of some fantastic results but safe in the knowledge that a strong Leam Rangers side would love to spoil the party. Attitude was the key word from the manager before the game and this Monkton team went into the game knowing that they were only one step from putting themselves on the big stage. You could tell by the concentration levels before the game as the sides warmed up that Phoenix were up for it and would start the game strong – and that’s exactly what happened.

From the very first minute, this confident Monkton side pressed Leam Rangers and had them on the back foot from the beginning. It wasn’t long before the 1st goal of the game came as Ryan latched onto a great through ball from Alex to slot his shot calmly past the Rangers ‘keeper in only the 2nd minute of what was already a thrilling game. 1-0, but Phoenix didn’t sit back; they kept the pressure on Rangers with a Kane effort grazing the bar before Alex put the rebound wide. Alex soon made amends when he got on the end of a great cross from the right wing and found the net with a beautiful header. At 2-0 up with only 3 minutes gone, but everything still to play for, Monkton knew they were in for a battle. But try as they did, Leam Rangers couldn’t break this Phoenix team down. From to back, Phoenix were at their best. Alex leading the line superbly, playing on the shoulder of the last man, Charlie out wide on the left making runs in support, tackling and heading superbly, Ryan on the right, beating players and putting crosses into the box before chasing back. Kane holding the midfield together, supporting in attack and chasing back to help the defence with last ditch tackles. Jack was on form at the back with some solid tackles and winding runs from defence. Ethan dealing with one of the biggest centre forwards in the league and having him wrapped up. Dan, a mere spectator for parts of the game concentrating throughout and springing into action when needed.  Callum warming up on the touchline eager to play his part.

Half time came with Monkton 2-0 to the good leaving the Manager with a dilemma. Should he make a change? Who can he take off after a performance like that? But this is a Team game and everyone plays a part. Charlie was the unfortunate player to come off but by no means was this a reflection of his performance. Callum a straight swap and into the left side of midfield he went and the commenced. The second half was equally as pleasing for the Phoenix manager as he watched his side challenged by tough opponents and constantly come out on top, whilst still creating chances. Mid-way through the second half Callum found himself in the box with the ball at his feet and when his first effort was blocked by the Rangers goalie he was there to slot home the rebound. Charlie was re-introduced as a reward for his first half heroics with the manager reluctantly removing his Captain, Kane to make way. Alex dropped into central midfield, Charlie back on the left and Callum upfront.

3-0 the final score in what was an impressive performance by Monkton Phoenix. This side passed and defended as a team and were brave in the tackle and they were rewarded for all their hard work with a place in the Cup Final!

The evening started with the word ‘Attitude’ and every one of the Monkton players had the right attitude before, during and after the game. They took everything they have learned on the training ground onto the pitch and they have made their manager, parents and spectators proud.

WELL DONE LADS, YOU DESERVE YOUR PLACE IN THE FINAL!!!
