Away cup match played on 16 February 2025.
Kicked off at 11:00 AM

In a commanding display, Newquay AFC Vets triumphed over Kernow Wanderers Veterans 1st with a resounding 5-0 victory in their league cup quarter final away match at the Richard Jory Playing Field on 16 February 2025. The match kicked off at 11:00 am, and the Vets showcased their attacking prowess throughout the encounter, leaving their opponents struggling to keep pace.

Newquay lined up in their usual 3-4-1-2 formation, a classic setup that allowed them to balance defensive solidity with attacking flair. Danny burrows making his debut took his position between the sticks, while a back three comprised of captain Dave Grose on the right, Tom Chambers in central defence, and Adam Weller on the left provided a sturdy foundation. In midfield, Lee Budge operated on the right, with Christopher Hall and Andrew Miles occupying central roles, and Daniel O'Toole on the left. Up front, with Serkan Acar operating as the number 10 leaving the dynamic duo of Martyn Probert and Ben Colquhoun were tasked with leading the line and converting chances into goals. The bench featured Steve Capeling, ready to make an impact if called upon.

The match began with Newquay asserting their dominance early on. But disaster struck when debutant Danny Burrows injured himself in the 4th minute meaning Player Manager Steve Capeling had to come of the bench and take his place in between the sticks. Martyn Probert opened the scoring in the 15th minute, showcasing his clinical finishing ability as he found the back of the net. Just four minutes later, Probert struck again, doubling the lead and putting Kernow Wanderers on the back foot. The relentless pressure from Newquay continued, and in the 26th minute, Daniel O'Toole added a third goal, further extending the Vets' advantage.

As the first half progressed, Kernow Wanderers struggled to find their rhythm, unable to penetrate Newquay's well-organised defence. The only real shot they had was initially spilled by Capeling but he redeemed himself by throwing himself at the strikers feet to block his effort and keep his clean sheet in fact. The half-time whistle blew with the scoreline reflecting Newquay's dominance at 3-0, leaving the Wanderers with a mountain to climb in the second half.

The second half saw Newquay maintain their intensity, and in the 74th minute, Probert completed his hat-trick, a testament to his exceptional performance on the day. With the score now at 4-0, the Vets were firmly in control, and the Wanderers' hopes of a comeback were all but extinguished.

In the closing stages of the match, Ben Colquhoun capped off a fine team performance by scoring the fifth goal in the 87th minute, sealing a comprehensive victory for Newquay AFC Vets. The final whistle confirmed a 5-0 scoreline, a result that highlighted Newquay's attacking prowess and defensive resilience.

Referee Kenneth Keemer oversaw the match, ensuring that the game flowed smoothly as Newquay AFC Vets advanced in the cup competition with a performance that will be remembered by their supporters. We progress to the semis against Bude date to be arranged. The lads were exceptional today and continued their dominance in cup competitions this season. As always good luck to all Newquay teams this weekend. Cheers Capes #upthemints
