Skelmersdale Youth U9 hosted JFA Sporting Lisbon U9 at Ormskirk School on the morning of 15 March 2026, with kick-off at 10:30am. The league neutral match, played over 50 minutes plus injury time, ended in a pulsating 5-5 draw, showcasing attacking flair and defensive resilience from both sides. Referee Brody oversaw a game packed with goals, tactical substitutions, and moments of individual brilliance.
Skelmersdale lined up in a 2-3-1 formation, a setup designed to balance defensive solidity with midfield creativity and a lone striker spearheading attacks. George Grant took his place in goal, tasked with organising the back line and commanding his area. The central defensive partnership was formed by Arthur Forshaw and Alfie Bullen, both expected to thwart opposition advances and initiate play from the back. In midfield, Peter Gerrard-Little operated on the left, Isaac Graham held the central midfield role, and Harry Humphreys patrolled the right flank, all three charged with linking defence and attack while providing width and service. Up front, Oliver Foster led the line as the sole striker, looking to convert chances and stretch the opposition defence. The substitutes available were Harry Wright, Jack Dalziel, Mack Kayll, and Jasper Taraldsen.
The match burst into life early when JFA Sporting Lisbon opened the scoring in the third minute with a stunning long-range strike fired in with the right foot, catching Skelmersdale’s defence off guard. Skelmersdale’s defence responded promptly, with Alfie Bullen making a crucial tackle in the sixth minute to prevent a clear chance, followed by Arthur Forshaw’s vital clearance a minute later, demonstrating the defenders’ alertness under pressure.
Skelmersdale’s response came swiftly as Arthur Forshaw delivered a precise long pass to Harry Humphreys, who made no mistake in slotting home the equaliser in the 11th minute. Just two minutes later, Humphreys turned provider, whipping in a dangerous cross that Oliver Foster expertly finished from outside the area with his right foot. However, the visitors capitalised on a defensive lapse to level the score again in the 15th minute with a close-range finish.
The game continued at a frenetic pace, and in the 18th minute, Peter Gerrard-Little unleashed a spectacular screamer with his left foot, assisted by another pinpoint cross from Humphreys, to restore Skelmersdale’s lead. Unfortunately, the joy was short-lived as Gerrard-Little was forced off injured in the 20th minute, replaced by Harry Wright.
Skelmersdale quickly regained momentum with Foster scoring a tap-in from close range in the 21st minute, again set up by Humphreys’ intelligent short pass. Yet, the match took a dramatic turn in the 22nd minute when goalkeeper George Grant misjudged a situation, allowing the opposition to score. This was followed by a tactical substitution at the 23rd minute, with Jack Dalziel coming on for Foster.
The first half concluded with further tactical changes: Jasper Taraldsen replaced Alfie Bullen, and Mack Kayll came on for Harry Humphreys at the 25th minute mark. The defensive efforts continued as Isaac Graham blocked a chance in the 26th minute and Harry Wright made a timely tackle a minute later. Arthur Forshaw intercepted a pass in the 28th minute but was unable to prevent the opposition’s attack from continuing.
A costly misjudgement by Isaac Graham in the 30th minute led to an own goal, with the ball deflecting off his left foot from a cross, bringing the visitors level once more. George Grant made a crucial catch from a cross in the 31st minute and followed up with two remarkable point-blank reaction saves in the 34th and 36th minutes, keeping Skelmersdale in the contest.
Jack Dalziel showed his creative spark around the 38th minute, delivering a slide rule pass that created a chance, followed by a flick that, although not resulting in a goal, demonstrated his vision. Unfortunately, Mack Kayll had to be withdrawn due to injury in the 39th minute, with Harry Humphreys returning to the field.
Tactical substitutions continued with Oliver Foster reintroduced for Jasper Taraldsen in the 41st minute and Peter Gerrard-Little returning for Jack Dalziel in the 42nd minute. The visitors responded with a stunning screamer of their own in the 43rd minute, levelling the score once again.
Skelmersdale’s Oliver Foster then produced a solo goal in the 45th minute, finishing from close range after a long pass from George Grant, showcasing individual skill and composure. However, JFA Sporting Lisbon struck back inside the box with a close-range right-footed finish in the 48th minute, bringing the scoreline to 5-5.
In the dying moments, Arthur Forshaw made a vital clearance in the 49th minute to deny the opposition a late winner, ensuring the match ended in a thrilling draw.
The game was marked by standout performances from Isaac Graham, Arthur Forshaw, and Harry Humphreys, all named players of the match for their contributions in midfield, defence, and attack respectively. The 2-3-1 formation was tested to its limits, with Skelmersdale demonstrating resilience and attacking verve but ultimately sharing the spoils in a memorable encounter.
