South City FC travelled to Prisons Ground on 12 April 2026 for their league away fixture against Spanner FC, kicking off at 1:15pm. The match ended in a heavy 5-0 defeat for South City, with Spanner FC dominating proceedings throughout the 90 minutes plus added time. The modest crowd of 50 witnessed a one-sided encounter as South City struggled to contain their opponents.
South City lined up in a 4-3-3 formation, aiming to balance defensive solidity with attacking width. In goal, Sam Kiptoo was tasked with keeping the net secure. The back four consisted of Nick Kantai at right back, David Nakhunghu and Fabian Otieno as central defenders, and Amos Kimelly on the left flank. The midfield trio featured Patrick Muraya on the right, D Dennis centrally, and Manucho Kupany on the left, expected to provide both defensive cover and creative support. Up front, Alvin Lole operated on the right wing, Rodney Korir led the line as striker, and Alvin Kivuva took up the left forward role, all charged with breaking down Spanner’s defence and scoring goals. On the bench, South City had James Daya, Kenneth Mutisya, and K Kivuito available for tactical changes or injury cover.
The match began disastrously for South City as Spanner FC opened the scoring in the 8th minute. A defensive mistake allowed the home side to capitalise from close range, with a left-footed finish that left Kiptoo helpless. The early goal set the tone for the rest of the first half, as Spanner FC pressed their advantage relentlessly.
Twelve minutes later, Spanner doubled their lead with a spectacular long-range strike. From outside the box, a right-footed shot flew past the South City defence and goalkeeper, extending the lead to 2-0. South City’s midfield struggled to gain control, allowing Spanner’s attackers too much freedom.
The pressure continued to mount and in the 35th minute, Spanner scored their third goal. A frantic goalmouth scramble ensued, with the ball eventually bundled over the line from close range with a left-footed effort. South City’s defenders were left scrambling, unable to clear their lines effectively.
The first half concluded with South City trailing 3-0, a deficit that reflected their inability to contain Spanner’s attacking threat or create meaningful chances of their own.
At half-time, South City made a series of tactical substitutions in an attempt to change the game. Rodney Korir was replaced by goalkeeper Sam Kiptoo, an unusual move indicating a possible reshuffle or injury issue. Immediately after, Patrick Muraya came on for Sam Kiptoo, and then James Daya replaced Muraya, all within the 46th minute. These rapid changes suggested a desperate attempt to regain control and inject fresh energy into the side.
Despite these changes, Spanner FC continued to dominate. In the 70th minute, they added a fourth goal from close range inside the box, once again finished with the left foot. South City responded with a substitution of their own, bringing on Kenneth Mutisya for Manucho Kupany to try and shore up the midfield.
Just five minutes later, South City were forced into another change due to injury, with K Kivuito replacing right defender Nick Kantai. The defensive reshuffle did little to stem the flow of Spanner’s attacks.
In the final moments of the match, Spanner completed their rout with a fifth goal. A deft lob over the goalkeeper was executed with the left foot, sealing a comprehensive 5-0 victory.
South City FC’s day at Prisons Ground was a harsh lesson in defensive frailty and the gulf in quality against a ruthless Spanner FC side. Despite the tactical substitutions and formation, they were unable to halt the relentless onslaught or find any foothold in the game. The defeat leaves South City with much to ponder as they look to regroup in their upcoming fixtures.
