On 4 October 2026, Stoneygate Lion Juniors hosted their local rivals Stoneygate Lions U15 Blues at the Stoneygate Lions U13 Juniors ground in a fiercely contested cup match that kicked off at 10:30am. The 70-minute encounter, played under 11-a-side rules, ended in a dramatic 4-3 victory for the Lion Juniors.

Stoneygate Lion Juniors lined up in a 4-4-1-1 formation, deploying Neo Routledge in goal. The defensive line consisted of Theo Sebastian at right back, Priyan Purshottam and Alfie Roberts as central defenders, and Hamza Mukadam on the left. The midfield quartet featured Dylan Atkins on the right wing, Isaac Liburd and Harvyn Purewal centrally, and Alfie Oldman on the left. Kabir Sian played just behind the lone striker, Will Neilson, who led the attack. The substitutes available were Veer Purshottam, Javyn Purewal, and Owen Hopkins.

The match began with an early blow for the Lion Juniors as the U15 Blues took the lead in the 10th minute. A close-range finish with the right foot gave the visitors an early advantage. However, the Juniors responded swiftly when Will Neilson converted a penalty just two minutes later, firing low and precise from close range to level the scores.

Momentum swung firmly in favour of the home side as Neilson continued to torment the opposition defence. At the 26th minute mark, he netted again, this time expertly finishing a cross delivered by attacking midfielder Kabir Sian inside the box with his right foot. Remarkably, Neilson struck once more within a minute, this time unleashing a powerful long-range shot from outside the box that flew past the goalkeeper, putting the Lion Juniors 3-1 ahead.

As the first half neared its close, the Juniors made a triple substitution at the 35th minute. Veer Purshottam replaced central midfielder Harvyn Purewal, Javyn Purewal came on for attacking midfielder Kabir Sian, and Owen Hopkins took over from left midfielder Alfie Oldman. The half concluded with Stoneygate Lion Juniors holding a 3-1 lead.

The second half saw the U15 Blues mount a spirited comeback. They pulled a goal back in the 54th minute and then equalised five minutes later at 59 minutes, narrowing the deficit to 3-3 and setting up a tense finale. The Lion Juniors responded by bringing Kabir Sian back on for left defender Hamza Mukadam at 62 minutes, signalling a tactical shift to regain control.

Tensions escalated when the U15 Blues were reduced to ten men after a red card was shown in the 70th minute, giving the Juniors a numerical advantage heading into the final moments. Capitalising on this, Will Neilson stepped up once again to score a decisive penalty in the 71st minute, securing a 4-3 victory for Stoneygate Lion Juniors.

This pulsating cup tie showcased the Juniors’ resilience and clinical finishing, particularly from their striker Will Neilson, whose four-goal haul proved the difference. The tactical 4-4-1-1 formation allowed the team to maintain defensive solidity while providing attacking support through Sian and the wide midfielders. The substitutions made at half time and early in the second half helped refresh the squad and ultimately contributed to their hard-fought success.
