The start of our Cup journey today facing Poulton Vics Youth a league below ourselves. A rather poor start from ourselves giving the ball away to easily soon evaporated when we scored our first goal, a ball was played into the box and Hamm with his back to goal looped a ball over his head and Sean Phillips met it with a stunning half volley which arrowed into the corner 1-0. Moments later it was 2, Hamm was taken out but the ref waved play on and Hardman advanced in the area and rounded the keeper, his effort was cleared but only to the feet of Ryan Smith who made no mistake firing in 2-0. Easterbrook then had a great header superbly saved and Dave Leslie hit a decent effort inches wide but it soon became 3 as a great bit of team play between Hardman and Hamm found Phillips in space to finish easily past the keeper for his second 3-0. With minutes of the half left we got our fourth as Hardman tried to find his way into the box he intelligently kept hold of the ball and played a simple pass back to Smith who smashed a brilliant effort past the helpless keeper 4-0. Half Time Hamm with a slight injury concern came off for Rose, and it was Rose who had our first opportunity as he went close with a neat effort. Curran replaced Morgan and Yates replaced Easterbrook on 58 minutes and Curran came close with a corner which connected with the crossbar shortly after his arrival. Rose was getting himself into good positons and it was a cleared shot from himself which found its way to Hardman who lobed the rebound in for our fifth 5-0. Straight down the other end Poulton got an unlikely goal as Adams conceded a foul in the box and the penalty was converted with ease past McLaughlin 5-1. Hardman kept working hard and it was his efforts which resulted in our sixth as he kept a loose ball in play and squared it back to Rose who made no mistake slotting in for 6-1. It should and maybe could have been 7-1 shortly after as a great ball by Adams found its way to Hardman who’s effort was only partially saved by the keeper and it looked like it had sneaked over the line but the ref waved away Hardman’s plea for a goal. Poulton wasn’t giving up and they got a second when a free kick was awarded for a silly foul and the taker hit a stunner top corner to leave Jason with no chance 6-2. With 5 minutes left Rose nearly got in on the act again when he collected a fine Crossfield ball from Curran on his chest and hit a shot first time which just flew over. Not to worry as it was soon 7, a great team move, as Curran played a thru ball to Adams who squared back to Hardman who instantly took a shot which rebounded back to him and slotted it second time round past the keeper to end affairs at 7-2. A valiant display from Poulton but in truth we will face much more difficult games than today but non the less we have to put teams away and today we did with an assured performance all round. Some great performance’s today Ryan Smith again continued his fine form and goal scoring but Sean Phillips just shaded M.O.M for an incredible first half performance and a workmanlike second.
