The Fountain FC travelled to Derwentside Park on 21 May 2026 for a friendly away fixture against Castleside Club FC, kicking off at 7:00pm.

The Fountain FC lined up in a 4-2-1-3 formation, Andy Gowland started in goal, protected by a makeshift back four of Ant Sands at right back, Joe Currie - serving as todays captain - and Jonny Thirlaway as central defenders, and Brandon Fitzgerald on the left. In midfield, Ian Johnstone and Liam Henry operated as the two central midfielders, providing both defensive cover and transitional play. Ahead of them, Lewis Currie took up the attacking midfield role, tasked with linking midfield and attack. The front three consisted of Rowan Latimer on the right, Matty Wheatley leading the line as striker, and Scott Thompson on the left, expected to stretch the opposition defence and create scoring opportunities. The substitutes available were Callum Collins, Owen Hardy, Damo Freeman, and Similoluwa Afilaka.

The match began with both sides probing cautiously, but it was Castleside Club FC who proved the more dominant side early on, applying high pressure throughout. Their first chance came early on when a Castleside attack lead to a striker in a 1v1 position against the keeper. Opting to hold his line, Gowland heroically saving the shot to his side, keeping the score level. But Castleside were not done, a second opportunity arose shortly after with a scuffle in the away sides box, as Gowland once again parried a shot, creeping onto goal, but was magestically back-heeled off the line by Liam Henry, as the game continued.

Castleside would finally break the deadlock in the 35th minute from a freekick, whipped into the back stick, before being headered across the box and tapped into goal in a frantic goalmouth scramble, leaving The Fountain FC defence scrambling and Gowland unable to prevent the opener. The first half ended with Castleside holding a slender 1-0 lead.

At half-time, The Fountain FC made two immediate tactical substitutions, bringing on Callum Collins in goal for Andy Gowland and Owen Hardy for Scott Thompson. These changes suggested a desire to freshen the squad and perhaps alter the attacking dynamics on the left flank.

Early in the second half, Castleside extended their advantage when they were awarded a penalty in the 53rd minute, after the striker managed to get in behind the Fountain defence, before being brought down by captain Joe Currie. Up stepped ex-Fountain vice captain Jamie Tincknell, who converted the chance with clinical precision. The visitors were now two goals behind and faced an uphill battle.

The game grew scrappy from here on out, with even the first half seeing it's fair share of heated moments. It looked like the Fountain had no way back into this game. Fountain FC responded with further tactical adjustments at the 55th minute mark, introducing Damo Freeman for Jonny Thirlaway and Similoluwa Afilaka for Liam Henry. These changes aimed to inject energy and creativity into the midfield and defence.

The comeback began in earnest in the 64th minute when Rowan Latimer curled a superb direct free-kick from outside the box into the net, halving the deficit and reigniting hope for The Fountain FC.

Just a minute later, another substitution saw Liam Henry return to the pitch, replacing Ian Johnstone, signalling a reshuffle in midfield to bolster attacking impetus. Meanwhile, Sunday league legend Mark Thompson makes a grand return to the pitch in place of Brandon Fitzgerald, hoping to help bolster the team's dynamics.

The momentum swung further in The Fountain FC’s favour in the 75th minute as Similoluwa Afilaka scored a deflected free-kick from outside the box, equalising the score at 2-2. This goal showcased the visitors’ resilience and set up a thrilling finale.

However, the joy was short-lived as Castleside Club FC struck back immediately in the 76th minute, as Tincknell once again steps up to take the kick off, but fires in a long-range strike that caught Collins off his line, as the ball struck the crossbar, before hitting Collins and settling in the back of the net, restoring Castlesides lead to 3-2.

The Fountain FC made another change in the 80th minute, with Andy Gowland returning to goal due to an injury to Matty Wheatley, who had been leading the line.

Tensions rose late on when Joe Currie was shown a red card in the 82nd minute for dissent by word or action, leaving The Fountain FC down to ten men during the crucial closing stages.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, The Fountain FC pushed forward in search of an equaliser but were unable to break down Castleside’s defence, and the match ended 3-2 in favour of the home side.

The referee’s performance was middling, rated at 50, with the red card decision adding to a somewhat fractious finale. The modest crowd of 25 witnessed a game of fluctuating fortunes, with The Fountain FC showing promise but ultimately falling short in a spirited contest.
