The Fountain FC hosted Consett Steeltown First at the Delves Lane Community Association Pitch on 19 April.
The Fountain FC lined up in a 4-1-2-3 formation, deploying Callum Collins in goal for his second start for the team. The defensive line consisted of Ant Sands at right back, Dan Cave and Damo Freeman as central defenders, and Jonny Thirlaway at left back. Ian Johnstone operated as the holding central midfielder, shielding the back four. Ahead of him, Joe Currie took up the right attacking midfield role, with Lewis Sullivan on the left. The front three featured Rowan Latimer on the right wing, Favour Ekomemen leading the line as striker, and Lewis Currie on the left forward position. The substitutes named were Jamie Tincknell, Brandon Fitzgerald, Nathan Sterling, and Andy Gowland.
From the outset, The Fountain FC showed attacking intent, displaying venom in their attacks that were defended well by Steeltown. At 10 minutes, Joe Currie opened the scoring with a composed finish inside the box, capitalising on a flicked on header assist from Favour Ekomemen. Ten minutes later, Currie was again involved, this time providing a short pass to Lewis Currie who doubled the lead with a clinical finish inside the box. The attacking trio continued to cause problems, and at the half-hour mark, Favour Ekomemen found the net himself, converting a short pass from Rowan Latimer to make it 3-0.
The Fountain FC’s dominance on clear display, with Steeltown finding themselves majorily on the back foot, but with some phenomenal goalkeeping from the away side, they managed to stay in the game.
Just before half-time, Lewis Currie scored his second goal of the morning. Assisted by Joe Currie’s well-delivered cross along the face of goal, Currie struck with his right foot from close range inside the box, sending the home fans into raptures. The first half concluded with The Fountain FC comfortably ahead at 4-0.
At half-time, the teams regrouped, and The Fountain FC made an immediate tactical substitution, replacing central defender Dan Cave with Jamie Tincknell. The second half saw Consett Steeltown respond with renewed vigour. They pulled a goal back in the 50th minute with a close-range finish inside the box, signalling the start of their fightback.
The Fountain FC made another change at 55 minutes, bringing on Brandon Fitzgerald for right defender Ant Sands. However, Consett Steeltown struck again five minutes later, scoring another close-range goal inside the box to narrow the deficit to 4-2. The home side then replaced left defender Jonny Thirlaway with Nathan Sterling at 65 minutes, but Consett Steeltown capitalised immediately by converting a penalty to make it 4-3.
The Fountain FC responded with a tactical substitution at 70 minutes, bringing on Andy Gowland for left attacking midfielder Lewis Sullivan. Despite this, Consett Steeltown continued their resurgence, scoring a spectacular goal from outside the box in the 80th minute to level the match at 4-4.
As the game approached its conclusion, The Fountain FC made two further tactical substitutions at 85 minutes: Ant Sands returned to the pitch, replacing Rowan Latimer, and Lewis Sullivan came back on for central midfielder Ian Johnstone. Despite these changes, neither side could find a winner in the remaining minutes.
Referee David Tomlinson officiated the match with authority and consistency, ensuring a fair contest throughout. Joe Currie’s influential performance, contributing two goals and two assists, earned him the man of the match accolade. The 4-4 draw provided an exhilarating spectacle for the 35 spectators in attendance, showcasing attacking football and resilience from both teams.
