Willington Quay Saints travelled to St Peters Road on 14 February 2026 to face Wallsend Boys Club in a keenly contested league away match, kicking off at 2:30pm. The Saints ultimately fell to a 3-1 defeat after a spirited performance, with Wallsend Boys Club taking the honours in front of a modest crowd of 30 spectators.
Willington Quay Saints lined up in a 4-3-3 formation, deploying a balanced setup designed to provide width and midfield control. Ethan Dodgson took his place between the sticks as goalkeeper, tasked with organising the backline and keeping the opposition at bay. The defensive quartet consisted of Luke Taylor at right back, Elliott Mitchell and Tony Lucas as central defenders, and Charlie Hutchinson on the left flank, all expected to maintain solidity and repel attacks from the home side’s forwards.
In midfield, Thomas Reichelderfer anchored the centre, with Ryan Ferrier operating on the right wing and Ian Fada on the left, charged with both defensive duties and supporting the attack. Up front, the Saints deployed a front three of Robbie Shaw on the right, Harry Turnbull leading the line as striker, and Jeremy Amakie on the left, all looking to stretch the Wallsend defence and create scoring opportunities. On the bench, Carl Hetherington and Jake Charlton awaited their chance to influence the game.
The match began with Wallsend Boys Club asserting early pressure, and it was no surprise when they opened the scoring in the 16th minute. A powerful long-range strike from outside the box, expertly struck with the right foot, left Dodgson with little chance as the ball flew into the net. The Saints’ defence had been caught off guard by the precision and power of the effort.
As the first half progressed, Wallsend continued to dominate possession and territory. Their second goal came in the 35th minute when a well-worked move culminated in a right-footed finish inside the box, doubling their advantage. The Saints’ defenders struggled to contain the home side’s attacking threat, and the scoreline reflected Wallsend’s growing control.
Willington Quay Saints responded just before the interval, earning a penalty which offered a lifeline. In the 43rd minute, Robbie Shaw confidently converted from the spot, with an assist from Jeremy Amakie who had been instrumental in creating the chance. This goal injected some hope into the visitors as the referee blew for half time at 45 minutes.
The second half saw the Saints attempt to build on their momentum, but Wallsend Boys Club remained dangerous on the counterattack. In the 66th minute, the home side struck again with a precise right-footed effort from outside the box, restoring their two-goal cushion and effectively putting the game beyond doubt.
In response to the mounting pressure, Willington Quay Saints made a tactical substitution in the 67th minute, bringing on Carl Hetherington for Ryan Ferrier in an attempt to refresh the right midfield position and add impetus. Later, at the 78th minute mark, Jake Charlton replaced Ian Fada on the left side of midfield, signalling a further tactical adjustment to regain control in the middle of the park.
Despite these changes, the Saints were unable to break down Wallsend’s defence further, and the match concluded with the home side securing a 3-1 victory. Ethan Dodgson’s efforts in goal were a standout for Willington Quay Saints, making several crucial saves to keep the scoreline respectable and earning him the player of the match accolade.
The referee managed the game well, maintaining control with an assured performance rated at 80. While the Saints will rue missed opportunities and defensive lapses, the match provided valuable lessons as they look ahead to their next league fixture.
