Willington bowed out of the Stelrad Minor Cup after a poor second half saw Ponteland take full advantage to book their place in the last 16 of the competition.

The Quay made one change from last weeks draw at Rothbury with Darren Walsh missing out through injury, Joe Connor came into replace him whilst there were returns to the squad for Micky Young and Ryan Ferrier.

Ponteland came into the game top of the Tyneside Amateur league after an impressive start to the season but they didn't make the best start to the game as they conceded an early penalty as there defender brought down Saints winger Sean Conway in the area. Centre half Dale Johnson stepped up to take the spot kick and he made no mistake sending the keeper the wrong way to put the Quay ahead.

The Quay were dealt a blow when forward Dylan Adamson was forced off with injury after twenty minutes with Ryan Ferrier coming on to replace him

Ponteland grabbed an equalizer on the half hour mark after poor defending from the Quay, a corner came in low along the ground and Pont forward Kittisak Spratt was first to react to flick the ball home from 4 yards out.

Like last week the Saints responded to conceding by scoring a goal of their own, Johnson swung in a perfect free kick that Ferrier met with a powerful header into the corner for his fifth goal of the season.

The visitors made it 2-2 just before the break with a great goal the highly impressive Spratt was played through on goal and he buried his shot left footed in off the post to send the game into the break all square.

The second half saw Ponteland on top and they should of been ahead five minutes after the restart but their number 10 somehow fired wide of the post after he had wriggled his way through on goal.

Saints keeper Luke Ord then produced a brilliant save to deny Spratt his hat-trick after the forward had outpaced the Quay defence to smash his shot on goal but Ord got fingertips on the effort to deflect the ball over.

With twenty minutes to go Ponteland got the goal there play had deserved albeit with a hint of good fortune, Substitute Sean Macdonald receiving the pass 25 yards out before looking to cross to the back post but the ball evaded everyone and went in via the post.

The Quays cup season was in the balance and they almost got back on level terms after Ross Thirlaway had dribbled his way in the area only to be denied by a great save with his feet by the Pont goalkeeper.

The tie was sealed with 8 minutes to go with another goal from a corner by the away side, the ball again swung in to the near post where centre half Darren Robinson was left unmarked to head the ball home from 6 yards out.

Ord produced another stunning save in the dying minutes as he dived full stretch at his near post to keep a powerful strike out with a strong hand with the full time whistle going shortly after.

Disappointing day for the Quay with Ponteland deserved winners with no cups to play for Willington will now look to go on a good run in the league to finish as high as possible.

W.Q.Saints: Ord, Ramsay (Adams 70),D.Johnson, Ancrum, King, Connor, Clynch, Renwick, Conway (Young 64), Adamson (Ferrier 20), Thirlaway
