Woolston Rovers Thundercats travelled to St Joseph the Worker RC Primary School on 22 February 2026 for a 7:00am kick-off in their league away fixture against Irlam Vale U12 Opals. The 9-a-side match lasted 60 minutes plus injury time and ended in a 6-3 defeat for the Thundercats in a game that saw plenty of goals and drama. The attendance was a modest 20 spectators, and the referee officiated with an assured performance throughout.

Woolston Rovers lined up in a 3-2-3 formation, deploying three defenders at the back, two central midfielders, and a front three tasked with leading the attack. Tilly Rex guarded the goal, supported by Meah Lee at right defender, Martha Darnton centrally, and Izzy Acklam-Davies on the left. Ruby Lawton and Emily Ball operated as central midfielders, expected to link defence and attack while controlling the midfield battle. Up front, Robyn Wilkinson took the right forward position, Lexie Davies led as striker, and Lyla Carr occupied the left forward role, all charged with creating and converting chances. Jess Evans was named as the sole substitute.

The match burst into life almost immediately as Lexie Davies opened the scoring for Woolston Rovers inside the box in the second minute, giving the visitors an early lead and setting the tone for an open encounter. However, the joy was short-lived as Irlam Vale U12 Opals responded in the seventh minute, capitalising on a defensive mistake to level the scores. The early exchanges were frantic, with both sides pushing forward aggressively.

At 13 minutes, Woolston Rovers were forced into an early substitution due to injury, with Jess Evans replacing Meah Lee at right defender. This change disrupted the defensive rhythm slightly, and the home side took full advantage. Another defensive error allowed Irlam Vale to score again in the 29th minute, putting the Thundercats on the back foot heading into the break.

Remarkably, Meah Lee returned to the pitch just a minute later, replacing Jess Evans, restoring some stability to the backline. The first half concluded at 30 minutes with the scoreline reflecting a 2-1 advantage to Irlam Vale.

The second half saw Woolston Rovers fight back with renewed vigour. In the 40th minute, Lexie Davies struck again, this time finishing a well-crafted team move assisted by Robyn Wilkinson, bringing the scores level once more. Just five minutes later, Ruby Lawton demonstrated her attacking prowess by scoring inside the box to put the Thundercats ahead 3-2, much to the delight of their supporters.

However, the home side were not to be denied on their own patch. Irlam Vale U12 Opals responded swiftly with a goal in the 47th minute to equalise. The momentum then swung decisively in their favour as they scored four unanswered goals between the 52nd and 57th minutes, effectively sealing the match and leaving Woolston Rovers trailing 6-3.

Despite the scoreline, Woolston Rovers continued to press and create opportunities. Martha Darnton came close to adding to the tally with a late attempt in the 59th minute, but the effort was well saved by the home goalkeeper.

Throughout the contest, Izzy Acklam-Davies stood out defensively, while Ruby Lawton’s midfield contributions and goal were vital for the Thundercats. Lyla Carr’s work on the left flank also earned her recognition for her tireless efforts in attack.

In summary, Woolston Rovers Thundercats showed resilience and attacking intent but were ultimately undone by defensive lapses and a clinical Irlam Vale U12 Opals side that capitalised on their chances to secure a 6-3 victory on home soil.
