Wythenshawe Town Mavericks hit 3 goals without reply as they played their last game before the start of the 2019-20 Timperley & District season with a hard fought friendly win against a very good Chris Williams Football Academy after going 1 down.

Managed by some familiar, friendly, faces on the touchline The Chris Williams team came out all guns blazing and put a lot of pressure on The Mavericks. For the first 15 minutes or so Mavericks were limited to defending with only the odd flurry forward and worked very hard to keep The CW team from scoring.

However after 7 minutes the away side scored a fully deserved opener and were probably unlucky not to get another after a fine save from Jon. Eventually Mavericks played there way into the game and started to get on top. A few chances came and went and with the opposition still dangerous the team must have been wondering whether they would pay the price for all the missed chances.

Another attack after 28 minutes saw some good team play down the right with the ball eventually make its way to Callum who found himself on the right just wing, as he tried to put the ball in the box the ball was blocked by the defender however it spun out to James on the corner of the box who jinked his way through a couple of defenders and slotted the ball home.

The Mavericks were now in the ascendency and at times playing some nice football. 4 minutes after the first goal after another attack the ball broke to James, again, who took a strike from the edge of the box and it flew high into the goal.

The goal meant despite the shaky start Mavericks went into the break 2-1 up.

The second half was a very even affair, both teams putting together some good attacks, although the better and more clear cut chances fell the way of Wythenshawe, helped by the great attacking strength but also the strong solid defence held together in the centre by Theo & Isaac.

Chances again came and went for the Mavericks, Callum hitting the bar after a fantastic team move and shot, Max, James, Jayden making the goalkeeper work, who to his credit he pulled off a few decent saves.

It looked as if Mavericks had then extended their lead when a run and shot from Joe on the left resulted in another save from the keeper who parried it and as the ball fell for Jayden he tapped it in but the referee blew deciding Jayden was in an offside position.

CW had there breaks but the 2 centre halves helped by their fullbacks Tom, Codi and then Will and Joe dealt with everything thrown at them.

Danny and Cameron were solid in the middle of the park playing a more defensive role allowing Callum to push forward. Kayden carried on his good form from the weekend with Max playing just off the front man causing problems for the CW defence with his tidy footwork on the ball.

Jayden and James were causing problems for the CW backline all night and it was the two of them that linked up for the third goal. Some good work from Joe on the left saw him play the ball forward to Jayden who took one touch to control it and dink it in for James to run onto and score his hat trick with 5 minutes left effectively sealing the match.

A great game played in a great spirit by two very good teams.

Again a lot of good individual performances as well as a good team one especially after the first 15 minutes. Lots of things to be working on and to improve but a good nights work all the same.

Man of the match as always was a hard one James could easily have won it with his 3 goals however Theo at the back took the award for his dominant display.

Eyes now turn to the first of 4 Timperley & District Development games as we travel to Irlam which is sure to be a tough one, but we are looking forward to it.
