Young Stars travelled to Loerie Park on 15 March 2026 for a 4:30pm kick-off in a league away fixture against Southern Stars. The match ended in a thrilling 4-3 defeat for Young Stars after 90 minutes of intense football under referee Charles.
The Young Stars lined up in a classic 4-4-2 formation, aiming to balance defensive solidity with attacking threat. Jerome Boukers took his place in goal, protected by a back four consisting of Yanga at right back, Zop and Arzi as central defenders, and Seuna on the left. The midfield featured Rushine Davids on the right wing, Sout Lesley and Lizzy centrally, and Algin Kleynhans on the left flank. Up front, the strike partnership was formed by Ivandre Haaland on the right and Marcus Malgas on the left. The substitutes bench included Xavior Stukkies and Maydie, ready to be called upon if tactical changes were needed.
Southern Stars opened the scoring early, capitalising on a goalmouth scramble in the 11th minute that caught Young Stars’ defence off guard. However, Young Stars responded well, with Arzi stepping up to score a stunning direct free-kick in the 23rd minute, levelling the score and reigniting their hopes.
Shortly after, Young Stars made their first tactical substitution as Xavior Stukkies replaced Lizzy in the 25th minute, signalling a shift in midfield dynamics. Despite this, Southern Stars regained the lead just before half-time with a well-taken goal in the 41st minute, leaving Young Stars trailing 2-1 at the break.
The second half saw Young Stars come out with renewed vigour. Rushine Davids found the net in the 58th minute to bring the sides level once more, showcasing his attacking prowess from the right midfield position. However, the match’s intensity boiled over when Yanga was shown a yellow card for dissent in the 65th minute, a moment that could have unsettled the team.
Southern Stars capitalised on a defensive mistake in the 71st minute to regain the lead, forcing Young Stars into another substitution. Maydie was introduced for Marcus Malgas in the 72nd minute, aiming to inject fresh energy into the attack. The move paid off immediately as Rushine Davids struck again just a minute later, firing Young Stars back on level terms at 3-3.
The closing stages were frantic, with Southern Stars clinching the winner in the 87th minute, leaving Young Stars to rue missed opportunities and defensive lapses. Despite the narrow defeat, Zop’s commanding presence at the heart of defence earned him the player of the match accolade for his resolute performances throughout.
In a match full of twists and turns, Young Stars showed great resilience and attacking intent but ultimately fell short by a single goal in a pulsating contest at Loerie Park.
