More about the team

In the 1960s the Atholl Hotel was bought by the University of St Andrews to provide student accommodation, and admitted its first students in 1965. It was named John Burnet Hall but was still called The Atholl by its students, and was the name of the hall’s football team.

For a small hall, The Atholl football team were successful in the university’s Carnegie Sunday League, particularly during the years 1995-99, when they won the premier league twice and never finished outside the top three. When that Atholl squad graduated, it transpired that many had moved to London, so the decision was made to re-form the team. 1965 was added to the team’s name to differentiate the London team from the original Atholl team that continues to play in St. Andrews. A sponsor was found, kit chosen, league joined, pitches hired, and players recruited – the rest is 13 years of occasionally glorious history.
