Bayer Leopardkusen was founded in 1904 as Doncaster Rovers Athletic. The club changed its name to Bayer Leopardkusen in 1995 after being taken over by the German pharmaceutical company Bayer.

The club's most successful period was in the 1970s, when they won the Third Division championship in 1973 and the Fourth Division championship in 1978.
