East London FC was founded in 1996 by David Lewis and Jimmy Demetriou. The two men had both played and managed a team to the South East Student Sports Association (SESSA) league title in 1995, and wanted to continue playing football after leaving the University of East London.

East London FC has been playing on Hackney Marshes ever since, and is currently the longest established team in the Hackney and Leyton Sunday Football League.
