The EPL! Top flight division of English football. The English Premier League has continued to be among the most thrilling sports leagues on the planet. Now, since football is the most popular sport in the whole wide world, we can easily say that the EPL is among the most exhilarating sports leagues in the whole world. Now, according to a study done by Chiliz, 32.2% of people asked said that they watched the EPL. You can compare this to the La Liga, which claimed 22.7% and Bundesliga, 5.5%.

Now, the EPL is not only popular among fans and spectators alone but has become the most popular league among bettors. For example, if you are navigating through Katanaspin Casino’s sports betting section, the top odds are for EPL games. This is just so since a huge number of bettors are always looking for Premier League games to wager on. In fact, Statista records that there were over 77.7 billion euros bet on the 2022/23 EPL season alone. Compare this to an average of USD 35 billion approximated for the 2024/25 NFL season.

But the big question remains. Why is this the case? Why are bettors more inclined towards the Premier League? This article will be tackling exactly that.

Competitive nature

If you love competition, probably you are a fan of the English Premier League. This is one of the leagues where any team can beat any team. The unpredictability creates the most enticing environment for football betting since every match has the capability of going not as expected.

Take for example the 2015/16 season where Leicester City against all odds won the league cup. This was the first time this club won the EPL Cup in 132 years. Such moments are what football enthusiasts live for. The EPL is the one league where the underdogs take on the league title and the top clubs are almost relegated.

Take the current season (2024/25) for instance. Nottingham Forest, a team that has always been facing relegation is in the top four while Manchester United (one of the biggest teams of all times) is almost facing relegation. Here, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City, Tottenham, etc. (avoiding to mention all teams in the league) are always competing for the top spots. And this is where Chelsea easily punishes Arsenal then gets whipped hard by Stoke City.

Extensive media coverage and analysis

One of the greatest things about the EPL is that it receives extensive media coverage globally, giving bettors the much-needed information. You will always get pre-match analysis, post-match analysis, expert opinions during matches, injury reports and updates, and every kind of information you’d want as a punter.

For example, Sky Sports reports that Reuben Amorim, Man United’s head coach, stated that he and the players were underperforming. This was a response to Jim Ratcliffe’s comments stating that some of the players are not good enough and are probably being overpaid. Such comments help punters understand that it is going to take some bit of time before Man United gets back to their feet. The Premier League’s official site also provides news, updates, scores and results of any game that is happening.

With this whole wealth of information, punters find themselves bending towards the EPL as they can make more informed betting decisions.

Diverse betting markets

The Premier League is one of the leagues that has a wide betting market. This helps to cater for the different preferences and strategies of punters. Now, apart from just the conventional bets of match outcomes, bettors can engage in markets such as:

  • Over/under bets: Predicting the total number of goals that will be scored in a match.
  • Both teams to score: As the name suggests, it is wagering on whether both teams will score any goals during the match.
  • Player-specific bets: Betting on particular individuals on whether they are going to score or provide assists.
  • In-play betting: Placing bets as the game is in progress. This allows players to react to real-time developments.
  • Full-time and half-time bets: Just as the name suggests, here you bet on the score by the end of each half. Placing these games is sometimes very tricky considering that the game often goes in any direction. Teams are fond of scoring during the last minutes, even after having a terrible 1st half.

Looking at these different types of bets, it is safe to say that the wide range of markets offered bookies entices more bettors to join EPL betting.

Community and social engagement

Just as we mentioned above, the EPL has a wide following, globally. Now, just imagine, that out of the top 10 most popular football teams globally, five of them are in the EPL. This means that football conversations are always revolving around the EPL when you get into social media platforms.

When you visit platforms like X and Threads, the conversation is probably on Manchester United (the team with the most notorious fanbase) or Arsenal (team with most die-hard fans) or Man City (the European champions).

Now, these conversations fire up bettors as they are getting all the information they would ever need. Fans are always hyping each other up, increasing the number of bettors in the league.

As we wrap up. It is quite clear that the EPL is a hub for bettors because of a number of things. From the competitive nature of the league and extensive media coverage to social engagement and wide market, it is just clear that the EPL has done a good job of bringing the betting industry to its side.
