This could really be a great game to revisit at the end of this year, we had many people putting in fine displays and staking a great case for their inclusion to our cup final. This game can be described as a big win in many ways then, with scorers coming from all over the place including two from the bench; all the starters and the substitutes entering the game and influencing it very well, this might be a first for us.

We also had another reversal we went 1-0 down before deciding to step up and win the game, the urgency we showed was too much in the end for Southchurch who felt the loss of their goal keeper to great effect. Some might say we only beat ten men, but the guys on the pitch don’t decide who stays and who goes, so we as a club can only beat who ever is in front of us.

The first half dictated a lot of the play we were camped in the opponents half and with the wind on our back we played the game to our pace, it was difficult to get a good touch and in truth we didn’t pull the trigger enough but at half time we chatted about it constructively and turned in a more professional second half. Karl had very little to do except make a good save from a strong drive, the defence handled a physical Southchurch. So 0-0 was probably the right result.

I feel we still played a little long to fast, and we didn’t spread play enough but I’m sure that was due to the windy weather conditions, when we did get it down we out played our opponent and created many chances to get the leveller and then winner and then a final nail in Southchurch’s efforts. We conceded first again disappointingly, when too many got caught behind the ball it broke to our right and our opponents somehow broke through and scored a fine goal (47 min). Not much we could have done about it except perhaps get back into shape a bit faster. Perhaps we got caught cold at half time. So I was hoping for a good reaction.

In all honesty our real reaction came after we changed the team a little, Jack came on for Ewan and Sam dropped into defence along side Kempy. This pushed Parker into a forward role. Our leveller came at the hands of Mike E, who now has 2 goals in 2 games now. The ball broke down our right hand side from good work involving Dan H, Jack and Mike. It then landed at Shane’s feet who pushed the ball across to Frosty who again showed great composure found Mike in the box who finished at the second time of asking (62min).

This then led a shift in possession and we seemed the more likely to score, Shane hitting the post and getting in behind a tired looking Southchurch defence. Our final change then saw Matt come on for Parker and as previously described he entered and had great effect. Within 10 minuets of coming on Matt found a great cross for Jack to volley home (80 mins) then before he was done he further punished Southchurch on the counter with a fine finish to the right of a stranded keeper (85)

So a difficult game turned into a good win, sounds like something we need to continue to emulate….Perhaps this Tuesday for instance.
