Greystones United FC 3 - 0 Edenderry Town FC 2nds
LSL Sat Major 1c 05 Mar 16

On a very muddy, heavy bog pitch which was impossible to play any kind of football on in Greystones,. The home team saw off a spirited Edenderry 2nds display, despite the fact that the away side fielded a young inexperienced and depleted team.

Greystones hit the front within the opening 20 minutes when team captain Alan Farrell lost the ball inside his own penalty area and the Greystones centre forward punished his error from close range leaving Edenderry keeper Johnny Hanan with no chance.

Edenderry seemed to get the upper hand after falling behind and dominated the rest of first half. Tone Byrne, Peter Mc Namara and Jack Lennon were causing their defence all sorts of problems getting in behind them time after time without causing their keeper any trouble. With the last effort of the first half Jack Lennon saw his effort hitting the side netting after some great build up play from Edenderry.

The away side's prospects of getting anything out of the game suffered numerous blows, with injures to Mark Young (ribs), John Doyle (knee) and Peter Mc Namara (hamstring) in the first half.

Things went from bad to worse for Edenderry with injuries when within 2 minutes of the restart; Dave Sherkle had to be replaced due to injury by youth team player Ross Glynn.

Due to all of Edenderrys injuries Greystones took control of the second half and were putting Edenderry under a lot of pressure. Within 15 minutes of the second half another mistake by Edenderry saw John Doyle’s back pass intercepted by Greystones and from the resulting play the ball ended up in the Edenderry net to give the home side a comfortable 2 – 0 lead..

As Edenderry pushed forward looking for a goal, Greystones were finding holes in behind the Edenderry defence. With 25 minutes to go Greystones put the game out of Edenderry’s reach when they made the game safe with their 3rd goal of the game.

Due to very poor refereeing the game was starting to boil over late in the second half seeing one player from each side seeing red. Greystones number 8 was sent off from throwing the head into Mark Young, at the same time Mark received a yellow card.

With 2 minutes to play the ref levelled the sides by sending off Mark Young for a second bookable offence. Only for the numerous injuries all over the pitch, the poor playing surface and also the poor refereeing Edenderry put in a very good team performance and put the fight to Greystones.

The final scored faltered Greystones

Edenderry Team: Johnny Hanon, Brian Clarke, Darren Doyle, John Doyle, Dave Sherkle (Ross Glynn 47 mns), Alan Farrell, Jamie Dolan, Jack Lennon, Peter Mc Namara and Tone Byrne – Subs Ross Glynn,
