Furngate Vets 2–3 Roffey Vets ?? A Game We Somehow Let Slip Away Only one dropout today left us with a squad of 14 players — and with temperatures hitting 30°C, it was always going to be a tough afternoon. But from the first whistle, Furngate started exactly how we had planned. The football was simple, quick and effective, and it was clear early on that Roffey weren't quite ready for the tempo we were playing at. They struggled to get near the ball as we moved it around quickly, creating space and chances. It was a real joy to watch. A few opportunities went begging, but eventually the breakthrough came. A fantastic assist from goalkeeper Garik Gellan set up Eric Johnson, who calmly slotted the ball home. Furngate 1–0 Roffey. Not long afterwards, another excellent Eric corner was delivered perfectly into the danger area, where Rob South met it with a superb volley to make it 2–0. At this point, if we're being honest, we were all thinking the same thing... 8 or 9, anyone? ?? Unfortunately, Roffey had other ideas. They began to grow into the game and started creating chances of their own. Garik was called upon several times and produced some fantastic saves, including an impressive double save to keep us ahead. We had chances to put the game beyond doubt, but the Roffey goalkeeper had other ideas and kept them in the game. HT: Furngate 2–0 Roffey My God, it was hot out there! ?? The second half continued with Furngate creating opportunities. Aaron Agyeman found himself one-on-one with the keeper, only to be flagged offside. Arron Morton came close, while Pistol rattled the crossbar. Any of those go in and surely the game is over. But football doesn't always work like that. Roffey eventually found a way back into the game with a really good goal to make it 2–1. We were beginning to feel the heat, and unfortunately the injuries started to pile up, with all of our substitutes eventually coming off injured. Still, we battled on. Then came a moment that really changed everything. Garry gave away a free kick. The Roffey player struck it well, Garik made another excellent save, but unfortunately the striker was first to the rebound and smashed it in off the post. 2–2. I honestly couldn't believe what I was watching. A game we had dominated for large periods had suddenly been turned completely on its head. We had effectively handed them two goals in a matter of minutes — and now there were only around 10 minutes left. And somehow... It got worse. With just a minute left on the clock, a routine header back to the goalkeeper from Rob South looked completely harmless. But Garik decided to use his feet, lost control of the ball, and suddenly... 3–2 Roffey. FT: Furngate Vets 2–3 Roffey Vets A seriously frustrating result. We had played some fantastic football, created plenty of chances and looked completely in control for large parts of the game. But football is about taking your chances and seeing the game out — and unfortunately today we didn't do either when it mattered most. There are, however, plenty of positives to take. ??
