Gikuni United FC travelled to Mang'u Primary School on 26 April 2026 for a league away fixture against Mang'u FC, kicking off at 3:45pm. The match ended in a 1-1 stalemate after a competitive 90 minutes of football, with both sides sharing the spoils in a closely contested encounter.
Gikuni United lined up in a 4-1-4-1 formation, deploying Dylan Oduor in goal to marshal the defence. The back four consisted of Kanyua Mukuria at right back, Michael Njau and Joseph Nucho as central defenders, and Shadrack Kigen on the left. Paul Ochieng operated as the lone holding midfielder, tasked with shielding the defence and recycling possession. Ahead of him, the midfield quartet featured Geoffrey Karanja on the right wing, Brian Orenge and Ezra Mutai occupying central attacking midfield roles, and Stephen Masakari on the left flank. Leading the line was striker Brian Njagi, expected to spearhead attacks and convert chances. On the bench, Stephen Kinyanjui, Benson Ndege, John Nduati, and Martin Muchui were the subs. Allan Kipruto also joined the side having come back since February.
The match began with Gikuni United showing intent, and it was Ezra Mutai who came close to breaking the deadlock early on. In the 11th minute, Mutai unleashed a powerful effort that rattled the crossbar, signalling Gikuni’s attacking threat. Ten minutes later, Stephen Masakari attempted a shot from the left but dragged it wide, missing a chance to test the home goalkeeper.
As the first half progressed, the midfield battle intensified. The visitors’ persistence paid off just before the interval when Stephen Masakari delivered a quick throw-in to Brian Njagi. The striker controlled the ball expertly before unleashing a stunning right-footed screamer into the net in the 42nd minute, giving Gikuni United a deserved lead heading into half time.
The second half saw Mang'u FC come out with renewed vigour, pressing for an equaliser. Brian Njagi twice tested the home goalkeeper with shots on goal in the 51st and 64th minutes, but both attempts were well saved, denying Gikuni a chance to extend their advantage. Stephen Masakari was a constant threat to the home side with many chances coming from him.
In response to the mounting pressure, Gikuni made a tactical substitution in the 73rd minute, bringing on Stephen Kinyanjui for Geoffrey Karanja to bolster the midfield and add fresh legs.
Despite Gikuni’s efforts to hold their lead, Mang'u FC struck back in the 83rd minute through a penalty kick after an awkward bounce found Kinyanjui's hand as he looked to clear the ball. Shortly after, Mang'u thought they had secured the win, but the Assistant Referee in the far side flagged for a foul on Dylan in the lead up to the goal.
The remainder of the match saw both teams striving for a winner, but neither could find the decisive breakthrough. The game concluded 1-1, a fair reflection of the balance of play across both halves, though Gikuni United will rue the opportunity to win 4 in a row. The first time they would have done so in Division II. Mang'u will take many positives from this result as they look to rise above the relegation zone.
