Gikuni United FC hosted XPION FC in a friendly encounter at Kirangari Youth Polytechnic on 29 March 2026, kicking off at 3:00pm. The match ended in a 2-2 stalemate after 90 minutes of competitive football, with XPION FC eventually edging Gikuni United 4-3 in a tense penalty shootout. The contest showcased tactical adjustments and spirited play from both sides.

Gikuni United lined up in a 3-4-2-1 formation, deploying three defenders at the back with Kanyua Mukuria on the right, John Nduati centrally, and Benson Ogamba on the left. The midfield quartet consisted of Shadrack Kigen on the right flank, Paul Ochieng and Geoffrey Karanja occupying central midfield roles, and Brian Orenge on the left. Ahead of them, Ezra Mutai and Stephen Masakari operated as right and left attacking midfielders respectively, supporting lone striker Maxwell Gikaru. This setup was designed to provide defensive solidity through the back three while allowing width and creativity from the midfield wings and attacking midfielders. The substitutes named were Michael Njau, Samuel Maina, Martin Muchui, and Stephen Kinyanjui.

The match burst into life early on as Gikuni United took the lead in the fifth minute. A well-worked team move saw right midfielder Shadrack Kigen thread a short pass to Maxwell Gikaru, who coolly finished with his right foot to open the scoring. This early goal set the tone for a lively first half, with Gikuni United looking to control possession and create chances through their midfield.

At the 18th minute mark, Geoffrey Karanja delivered a long key pass that carved open XPION FC’s defence, creating a promising opportunity for Gikuni United. However, the visitors’ defensive resilience kept the hosts at bay. Seven minutes later, Ezra Mutai attempted a shot that went wide, signalling Gikuni’s intent to stretch the opposition’s backline.

Midway through the first half, Brian Orenge was booked for obstruction in a foul that did not result in a penalty. The half concluded with Gikuni United maintaining their slender advantage, buoyed by their early goal and midfield control.

The second half began with a flurry of tactical substitutions from Gikuni United immediately after the break. Samuel Maina replaced Brian Orenge on the left midfield, Martin Muchui came on for striker Maxwell Gikaru, and Michael Njau took over from central defender John Nduati. These changes aimed to refresh the squad and inject new energy into the team’s attacking and defensive phases.

Almost immediately after the restart, Gikuni United doubled their lead. At the 46th minute, Brian Orenge, now off the pitch but credited with the assist prior to his substitution, played a short pass to Ezra Mutai, who finished inside the box with his right foot. This goal appeared to give Gikuni a comfortable cushion early in the second half.

However, the tactical reshuffle continued as Stephen Kinyanjui replaced Ezra Mutai at the 51st minute, signalling a shift in attacking options. XPION FC responded strongly, and the momentum swung dramatically in their favour.

At 54 minutes, Paul Ochieng was penalised for a push, though no penalty was awarded. Gikuni’s attacking efforts continued with Stephen Masakari forcing a save from the opposition goalkeeper two minutes later. Despite these attempts, XPION FC struck back with two quickfire goals in the 72nd and 73rd minutes, both scored inside the box with right-footed finishes. These goals levelled the match and injected fresh urgency into the closing stages.

The visitors’ unsporting behaviour earned them a yellow card at 78 minutes, while Gikuni’s right defender Kanyua Mukuria was booked for a trip a minute later. The game grew increasingly physical as both sides sought a winner.

Gikuni United pressed forward with Paul Ochieng attempting a shot saved at 83 minutes, followed by another effort from Stephen Masakari that was also denied at 85 minutes. Martin Muchui had an earlier attempt saved at 71 minutes, highlighting the hosts’ persistent threat despite the visitors’ resurgence.

The match concluded at 2-2 after 90 minutes plus injury time, leading to a penalty shootout to decide the winner. XPION FC edged the shootout 4-3, bringing an end to a fiercely contested friendly that showcased tactical flexibility and spirited performances from both teams.
