Greenock HSFP Black 5 vs 1 Spartinios City

The first group game of the Divisional Cup saw the High School take on Spartinios City.

The first half finished 0-0, but it felt like we had the better of the play and the clearer chances. We got the ball forward and into some dangerous areas, but at times our decision making in the final third could have been better, with some rushed shots and occasions where we maybe tried to do a wee bit too much when a simpler pass was on.

The second half was a different story.

Mure came to life and put us firmly in control of the game.

The opener came from a nice wee give and go with Kaiden, before Mure finished well from the right side of the box to make it 1-0.

The second goal started from deep when Shammy launched a long punt up the park. Their midfielder mistimed the header which sent Mure through on goal. He still had plenty to do, taking on two defenders before calmly slotting the ball under the keeper to make it 2-0 ??

Mure then completed his hat-trick when Kaiden played a brilliant defence-splitting pass that sent him clear, and he finished well to make it 3-0.

Spartinios pulled one back when their striker reacted quickest to a rebound to make it 3-1, but as always the boys responded well.

The fourth goal came from the left wing when Kieran delivered a cross into the box and Kaiden got the faintest of touches to squeeze it under the keeper for 4-1.

Spartinios had a decent spell before the fifth goal, but the High School defence stood firm all afternoon. Jay, Bob, Ben and Sam/Taylor were solid throughout, winning their battles and limiting Spartinios mostly to shots from distance.

The final goal was a great move. Ethan switched play with a long pass out to Lucas, who drove forward, rounded the keeper and finished into the far side netting to make it 5-1.

Overall it was a really strong team performance. Felt the boys out-battled and outworked Spartinios across the park and won the majority of the 50/50s, showing determination and strength in the tackles. That work rate and desire set the tone for the result imo.
