Guide Post began their U16 campaign in style continuing their excellent pre-season performances and producing a fine display of football. The opponents Newbiggin Hall looked a strong footballing outfit in the early stages but were matched in all areas by Guide Post. Joe Armstrong made his competitive debut in goal for Guide Post in the first half.
Guide Post took an early lead on 14 minutes after an even start to the game. Reece Bososmworth tucked away an opportunity from just inside the box sliding the ball low inside the near post. Reece had the ball in the net again 6 minutes later after a swift passing move but was ruled offside after an excellent early strike again from the edge of the box.
Within a minute Newbiggin Hall got the equaliser after a long ball by passed the two centre halfs and a the nippy centre forward sneaked between keeper and defence to tuck away a soft goal.
Regan Graham playing left midfield created a great chance on 24 minutes after beating two players and crossing low across the face of goal.
Then against the run of play Newbiggin Hall took the lead from a cleared corner when Callum and Andrew as last two defenders had a mix up and were dispossessed of the ball at half way leaving the centre forward to finish clinically from range. This was a bit of a stunner as Guide Post had begun to take control of the match by that stage.
The team responded positively and Ryan Young just failed to equalise with a curling free kick which just went over from wide left.
On 35 minutes Callum Pattison playing at left back made a strong run forward beating two defenders and won a corner. Guide Post had the ball in the net from Adam Dixon with a tap in but the goal was disallowed for a foul on the keeper.
Less than a minute later the scores were levelled with a screamer from Chris Johnson who latched onto a loose ball just outside the box.
Guide Post capitalised on this pressure and took the lead on 39 minutes when the influential Jack Taylor playing in central midfield with captain Reece Brown won the ball and slid a pass bewteen the defence for Chris Johnson to run onto and finish low past the keeper.
Deep into first half injury time Ryan Young who was having an excellent game at centre half with Adam Dixon mistimed a tackle and scythed down one of the opponents who had to be carried from the field. Ryan was booked for this badly timed tackle.
As agreed before the match Liam Halliday came on in nets for Joe Armstrong as Guide Post continue to assess which is their strongest keeper.
Guide Post started the second half much the stronger team and dominated much of the play. Twice in the 44th minute the lead could have been stretched with one goal line clearance and then a long range shot from Ross Moore just cleared the bar.
Then on 46 minutes Chris latched onto a long kick from Liam which cleared the entire opposition defence and slotted neatly for his hat trick. Score 4 -2.
Liam continued confidently in goal making a good clearance just outside the box from the advancing centre forward.
Guide Post had a third goal disallowed on 50 minutes with Ross ruled just offside after being threaded in by Reece Brown who'd just beaten two players.
Newbiggin Hall didn't give in and had a goal disallwoed themselves after the ball had been ruled out for a corner just before being tucked in.
Ross and Regan combined well on 62 minutes leaving Regan in on goal, the keeper making a good save.
On 64 minutes Liam and Ryan produced quick fire excellent point blank saves and blocks from the gritty centre forward.
Adam Boyd came on for Andrew Robson on 65 minutes and Callum switched sides to right back. On 71 minutes Callum surged through on the right beating two players and laid off to Ross who just put the ball past the near post.
On 72 minutes Chris got his 4th goal from a loose ball just inside the box. Score 5 - 2.
George Allsopp came on for Reece Bosomworth and then Brad Southern for Chris Johnson.
On 74 minutes Ryan Young knocked a corner in from the right which was cleared. He collected the clearance and from 25 yards curled the ball above the keeper into the far top corner to fonish what was an excellent all round display. Score 6 - 2.
Brad almost made it 7 with a late chance which was well stopped.
Ryan was awarded MoM for his overall display.
