Club AZ avenged their heavy defeat to Mary Dendy earlier in the season by outclassing an injury hit Dendy side at Mulberry Sports Centre. Dendy just couldn’t cope with AZ’s neat passing game and went behind as early as the twelveth minute when Jason Blythe glanced home a header from Jimmy Baskerville’s free kick wide on the left after Ryan Fallon had fouled Jon Blackburn. On the half hour Gareth Gibbons doubled AZ’s lead as he sent a superb curling shot past keeper Rob Tilley from the edge of the penalty area. Such was the home sides dominance it wasn’t until five minutes before the break that their new signing Harry Shatwell was called into action to make a save . Dendy lost the game within fifteen minutes of the second half as inexplicable errors allowed Jimmy Baskerville to score twice , once direct from a corner and the second one from a free kick next to the corner flag without anyone getting near the ball. Will Beighton made it 5-0 midway through the second half with a goal that epitomised Club AZ’s play.
John Whitehead broke up play midway inside his own half and powered forward releasing Paul Bethal down the wing , his pin point cross found Beighton completely unmarked four yards out and he gratefully side footed home.. Dendy did find the net themselves with a minute remaining as Luke Watkin burst through two AZ defenders to guide the ball wide of the advancing AZ keeper but it was always going to be AZ’s afternoon.
