It’s Back On!

FC Woodford ‘s title dreams were re- ignited as they thrashed Mary Dendy8-2 and Bulls Head wontheir first league game of the season against champions and table toppers FC Flyers .Trailing Flyers by eight points with three games in hand Woodford’s destiny is in their own hands and their determination is palpable – they WANT the title!

Scott Wright (red) scored twice for FC Woodford

It had looked good for Dendy as they were able to field one of their strongest lineups of the season welcoming back captain Steve Rowlands and their hopes were buoyed as Paul Richardson curled a free kick past Chris Kirk to give the home side the lead after only seven minutes but things started to go wrong when Tom Darcy poked home the equaliser midway through the half after the ball fell to hom following a corner . Dendy were then guilty of overplaying the ball in crucial areas as Woodford took the lead , Scott Wright having the simplest of tap ins after Jack Butterworth had robbed the ball from Steve Rowlands midway inside Dendy’s half and put over the perfect cross Butterworth himself made it 3-1 shortly after with a superb strike he received a ball from Will Pinder on the edge of the penalty area with his back to goal then turned and shot in one movement to give Shepherd no chance.

Dendy thought they had got back in the game less than a minute into the second when substitute Martin Brunker ‘s cross was met by the head of Adam Taylor but referee Mark Lee ruled that Taylor was in an offside position .The crucial goal came as Adam Ledgar made it 4-1 and Woodford had a three goal cushion . Paul Richardson’s converted penalty gave Dendy playan added urgency after he was brought down chasing the ball after his own free kick had rebounded off the defensive wall but less than five minutes later Alex Jackson made it 5-2 as he crashed home from the edge of the area under pressure from James Curbishley .

Man of the match FC Woodford's Jack Butterworth

Dendy just couldn’t wrestle back the impetus from Woodford with captain Luke Murray putting in an outstanding display in the centre of midfield with Nick Griffiths putting in some crunching tackles. Scott Wright came close to winning man of the match as first his cross found Will Binder and he thundered the ball past Shepherdand then he rounded the keeper himself and put the ball in to make it 7-2 all in the space of eighty seconds but the final goal came fittingly to the player that just pipped Wright for man of the match , JackButterworth who caused Dendy problems all afternoon and rounded off an excellent performance as he walked the ball in to make the final score 8-2 . There were some decent individual performancesfrom the home side but they desperatelyneed a victory to try and rebuild their season. For FC Woodford their title ambitions are well and truly alive !

Dave Vickers report:

Last game the word i used was poor. Today a few different words went through my mind as the game went by. I will settle on PROMISE. Looking at the record of WOODFORD, they had only being beaten by FC FLYERS in the league the final score of 8-2 to WOODFORD before the game would have not have been a surprise to me. WOODFORD were there early and trained hard before the start. Dendy again had a good t...urn out and it was close to the strongest team they have put out maybe only being shadowed by the team that beat NOMADS so well away from home in the second game of the season. Dendy played well and until they lost shape in last 10 mins when the score was 5-2 it was a much closer game then i expected. WOODFORD were a good side and i could see why they had only lost one game. A few turning points that changed the game were Adam's disallowed goal just after half time that would have made it 3-2 and a mix up in the Dendy goal which i think made it 4-1. WOODFORD played the long ball for most of the game and a flat back four of Dendy struggled to come to terms with how to deal with it. I think they should have defended a bit deeper myself and midfield needed to close the gap between themselves and the defence. Kerb got the donkey for going walkabout at the end from the back which if had worked may have got him man of the match but it didn't and led instead to the unfair score. Final word if they had played like they did today against most teams in the league they would have more points then they have this season.
