Monkton Vs Jarrow Super Blues

Saturday 17th October

A bright, chilly morning for the Vipers next outing – up against a tough Jarrow Team, who themselves have only lost once this year….Matt in goal, Sam, Thomas, James C, Kaie, James R, and Mason, Subs to start was Joe, Kyle and Max.

Some good warm up exercising courtesy of the resident Karaoke King himself….just back from his recent tour of Las Vegas…Mr Gary “Elvis” Keenan …a thank yer….

Game the getting under way the Vipers were quickly on the attack with good passing from Kaie and Mason winning a corner for the Vipers….good goalkeeping saw a clean catch, then good clearance playing the ball long downfield.

A fairly slippery surface from the nights rain had the ball skidding through fairly quickly, something that our defence and keeper had to watch out for…

Good pressure from Jarrow down the left and after some penalty box scrambling a quick fire snap shot found the roof of the net to make it 1 nil to Jarrow….

Nothing Matt could do about that one – just got to make sure we get rid of the ball in that situation in future..

A Vipers attack from the kick off was well broken down by the Jarrow defence who were defending in numbers, setting up an attack quickly again, only good clearances from Thomas and Sam prevented further chances for Jarrow – the Vipers still seemed to be off the pace and not our usual snappy selves….after a couple of long balls to either end the ball came back down the Vipers right and a long shot/cross was deflected luckily into the roof of our net…2 Nil Jarrow….

Again, nothing we could do with this one, I don’t even know who it hit on the way in but it was a definite deflection that Matthew had no chance with…

The 2nd goal was very unlucky for us but maybe gave us the jolt we needed to spring into life….which we certainly did..

Much better attacking from the kick off, good pressure from Kaie, working hard, playing the ball out to James C, running down the wing and earning a good throw in….taken to Kaie, then across to James R who’s great run then shot was blocked out for a corner….taken by Kaie and whipped across the box, just too high for Mason and James, then pushed out by Jarrow.

Throw ins for Jarrow down the left, good positioning from the Vipers who got goal side when they should, quick throw ins  for the Vipers and Kaie cut away through the middle, playing the ball through to James R but just too strong and the keeper collected well….having a good game for Jarrow (unfortunately for us)

Substitutions for Monkton – James C & R off, Thomas off, Kyle, Max and Joe on.

The lads were straight into the fray – tackling well and earning a corner straight away….corner this time from Kyle, whipping the ball across the box but a little too strong for some nervous Vipers who didn’t fancy sticking their head too close to it ! (Don’t blame them too much either…it was travelling...the word “rocket” springs to mind !)

After some further good tackling from Kaie, the keeper kicked clear, only to find Max just inside the half way line, who hit a great long shot over everyone’s heads but just saved by the keeper – great effort mate !

Half time…

Good team talk from Phil – got to stay sharp and work hard, tracking back from midfield and supporting the defence…it’s so important but not an easy job…lets get some shots in…we have some players with great shots on them…lets get some fired into the Jarrow goal and see what happens !

Kicking off with the same team, the Vipers were quickly on the attack, Kyle running down the left wing and a Jarrow block earning a throw in near the corner flag, quickly taken but well cleared by Jarrow.

Hard work from Joe up front, winning the ball back and playing in Kaie who’s ball through was hoofed clear by the Jarrow defence who’s game plan was obviously to hammer anything near their goal as far up field as possible…not pretty but very effective, some great performances by their defence - it was game plan that worked well for them and something we can definitely learn from in the right situation.

Not to be denied, Kyle picked up the ball on the left and ran past 2 midfielders, crossing well again, this time Joe just putting the shot wide…..Kaie picking up the ball from the goal clearance again and firing a shot in, blocked well by Jarrow and dropped to their midfield who cleared away down the right…Max picked up well and passed through to Mason down the right….running down the line and passing into Kaie, then Joe who’s shot just went across the face of goal …unlucky and could have been 1 back….

From the goal kick Mason picked the ball up from Kaie in midfield, working well down the right and all the way to the by line….the cross through to Joe was just blocked but earned us the corner…

Long corner from Kyle and had we players in their usual spots we could have scored but good defending again saw the ball clear..

James R back on and right back into the game, working well with Joe through the middle, getting right into the box and slotting the ball away to make it 2 – 1 and get the Vipers right back into the game….great finish to some excellent pressure…

Straight into the Jarrow kick off and terrier like tackling from Joe and Kyle saw Kyle take the ball away down the left, tricky dribbling creating some space and a wonderful left foot shot looked goal bound all day….if only the keeper hadn’t been in the way !....It hit him and moved him back about 3 yards but he held onto it and saved brilliantly….great effort though Kyle….

More pressure from Monkton had us committing numbers forward and it was inevitable that Jarrow would break away….this they did and it was only down to Thomas, chasing all the way back and making a FANTASTIC last ditch sliding tackle that stopped a great chance for Jarrow – brilliant mate !

From the corner Max cleared well – had he missed it Jarrow players were right behind him ready to pounce so well done again….playing out to Sam who passed well to Joe, keeping the pressure on Jarrow….another long clearance from Jarrow saw the ball out for a goal kick, quickly taken by Matthew.

Matthews great goal kick went out wide to James C, playing into Joe, then James who’s shot was blocked but fell to Thomas…didn’t quite connect on his shot but the ball bounced awkwardly for the goalkeeper and struck the post before coming out…incredibly unlucky Tom !

From the goal kick Jarrow broke away again, this time just getting past Max and Matthew making himself big just put the striker off enough to have his shot hit the far post, come back across the goal and save 2nd time !

Is this exciting or is it just me ?

The goal kick was pretty much the last thing that happened….whistle to the refs lips and full time.

The Vipers first defeat of the Season but a fine 2nd half performance (that we won 1 nil) but lost the game 2 – 1….very hard lines and credit to you all for battling to the end..

Man of the Match went to James Reed and James Catley for battling performances….

Great effort from everyone and if we learned 1 thing today it’s that we have to get off to as fast a start as possible …literally from the refs whistle !

Hard lines again guys but we’ll be ready to bounce back after a 2week rest….next up …the Vipers Reds !

See you Wednesday !
