Monkton Vs Sheriff Hill                        Saturday 7th November – 09:00hrs

A 1st round Cup game for the glory hunting Vipers today…up against a Sheriff Hill team that have improved steadily since the beginning of the Season.

With the Cup games structured differently this Season, basically played as a friendly followed by a penalty shoot out to progress to Round 2, Phil took the chance to give the team a new look and maybe try a few new positions.

Matt in goal – with a big penalty shoot out to come, he was licking his lips !...Max and Sam in defence, Thomas in the centre of midfield, James Catley wide left and Mason wide right, the sharpshooter James Reed up front, with Kyle and Joe warming up on the sidelines, itching to get into the action…

Kaie unavailable today, under the weather but your Vipers team mates wish you well and back on your feet soon !

The game getting underway with the Vipers tackling well, James Reed running through the centre but just losing out to the Sheriffs defence….Mason and James C getting stuck into early tackles.

Long ball out by the Sheriffs keeper was collected well by Thomas in midfield, passing the ball nicely through to James Catley who went away down the left, crossing through but booted clear by the defence…nice bit of passing though.

Clearance from Sheriff Hill went down the middle, Thomas again collecting well, this time passing through to Mason who ran away down the wing, before a quick cross went too tight and out for a goal kick.

Sam and Max coming into play from the goal kick, working well together, chasing and tackling back before making the clearance down the line to James Catley…tough tackling from Sheriff Hill won the ball back and a throw in got the ball over our heads and in for a cross shot that Matt gathered well….got to get goal side guys !

Sheriff Hill keeping the pressure on our defence – great tackling from Max and Sam again, Thomas also back in the thick of it and clearing well to James Catley who was away down the left and crossed well to Mason, then onto Thomas and back to James Reed…good movement fellas !

Good run from James through the centre but Sheriff Hill got the tackle in and cleared well, remember to look up James mate - a little look either side would have seen James Catley and Mason both open but good try all the same.

Sheriff Hill eventually won a throw in but Thomas chased back tigerishly…playing another ball through to Mason who chased down the right, playing back across to Tom, then onto James Catley who played a killer pass across the box, just slipping past James Reed but Mason closing in at the far post just tucked it inside the near post to make it 1 - 0 Vipers !

More attacking from Sheriff Hill attacking down the right and pushed wide by James Catley – playing a blinder – this time the cross came over but Matt was on hand to collect well and play a great long ball down the pitch.

Half time Whistle

Quick team talk but not a lot to say – more of the same and keep working hard !

Starting the 2nd half with Matt, Max, Sam, Kyle on for James C, Joe on for Thomas who was playing despite having been unwell recently, James R, and Mason.

Pulling the midfield in tighter, Mason & Kyle playing in the centre with James ahead then Joe up front, a more attacking line up for the 2nd half.

Getting underway quickly, Sheriff Hill worked hard, with Jordan (Vipers trainer) and partner worked well to cut a gap in our midfield, it was a clearance from Sam that stopped that little game, passing up to Kyle who’s long pass through to Joe was just put out for a throw in..

A quick ball in from Kyle down the left found Joe who turned into space, running through with the ball and firing in a shot that just went wide, great bit of play and teamwork from you guys !

Turning defence into attack, Sheriff Hill broke away down the left, only Max’s interception stopped the attack, passing to Mason who was away down the wing, crossing to James Reed who was just about to shoot after some silky skills had beaten 2 men, when he was fouled by the defender….up stepped Kyle who fired in a great free kick, the ball nestling in the bottom left hand corner to make it 2 – 0 to Vipers !

From the kick off, more good attacking from Kyle and James down the left earned another corner for the Vipers, James Reed, Mason & Joe running the defence a merry dance as Kyle fired another one across the box that was unluckily turned into the net by the Sheriff Hill defence to make it 3 -0 to the Vipers..

From a goal kick from Sheriff Hill, Joe was sniffing around for a loose ball, nipping in to snatch the ball and only a good save from the keeper prevented another goal.

Changes again, James Reed off, Mason off, Thomas on, James Catley on….straight into the play again and good tackling won the ball back for the Vipers, Sam hitting the ball long to Kyle who’s first time long range effort found the net to make it 4 Nil – Vipers !

Good tackling again from Sam, Max and Thomas stopped further attacks from Sheriff Hill, Joe Mitchell working hard, tackling back and winning the ball due to hard work and effort – creating more chances for the Vipers which was great to see.

Got to keep our eyes peeled at all times as once or twice Sheriff Hills players were drifting off us and creeping round the back….gotta watch out for these sneaky little moves !

Full time whistle

And now the fun really starts !

Being a new Cup competition this year the result of the game wasn’t to be considered, the deciding factor of who progressed to round 2 was down to penalties….oooohhhhh !

After Sheriff Hill scored their first, first up for the Vipers was Kyle who lashed a shot home, putting the ball and the keeper into the net !

Sheriff Hill had their shot saved well by Matt

James Reed up next who hit the target but had his shot saved well….

Sheriff Hill again had their shot saved by Matt – really on his game today..

Joe up next who tucked his into the bottom corner… 2 – 1 to the Vipers !

Sheriff Hill’s next penalty shot was again saved , pushed round the post by Matthew…brilliant !

Thomas up next who’s shot was saved, hard lines mate, but so was Sheriff Hills next shot…..back to the Vipers….Mason up next and his shot was also saved ! Some great goalkeeping skills on show here today….

Sheriff Hills next shot was saved, then up came Max….confidently struck into the bottom corner…3 – 1 Vipers…

Sheriff Hill pushed this one wide, then Sam waltzed up to the ball, confidently hitting the back of the net…..

Sheriff Hills final effort was saved by Matt and up stepped James Catley for our final effort….just pushing his shot wide but it didn’t matter a jot….4 – 1 to the Vipers and on to round 2 we march !

Better start learning the words now guys…..
