Well it was battle of David and Goliath.
The first 10min Nepean pressed and created attacking opportunities by playing in their 7 and 11 behind Sutherland's 2 and 5. Both Nepean's 7 and 11 were not afraid to take on our wide defense and were intent on getting crosses in to their tall and strong number 9. Fearless Maddy marked her and was successful in negating her offensive thrusts. After we had come to terms with their bossing around in midfield, our midfield trio started to play a passing game that dictated proceedings for the rest of the half. On numerous occasions they looked for Charlotte who was very lively both offensively and defensively. Charlottes crossing was always successful and caused many stresses upon the Nepeans lethargic defense. Charlottes willingness to drop and defend made her performance truly rounded making the decision to name her player of the match so much simpler. Maddy was asked to Captain the group and she was flawless in her application. The second half drew a different picture with the wind behind Nepean's backs their direct forceful style of play kept our midfield on the back foot. Some gallant defending and safe hands of Bree kept us in the match. However a pass made inside by Sutherland allowed a quick press from the Nepean midfield to brake our control of the play just outside the box. An unstoppable shot ensued and the score was leveled at 1-1. A number of opportunities were created for both teams but after 90min 1-1 it remained. A special mention for Marissa working hard as the number 9 proving you don’t need to be quick to be an effective 9, and a big thank you to the U17’s (Nicole and Di) who helped out on the day. Also Jelena for yelping when she scored, after a bashing home the goal after Kate put the ball on the platter for her.
Next Sunday is the start of what can be a very successful season, let’s make everything count!
