Wimborne Far Too Hot!

Pre-season over, the time had come for the team to begin their season long campaign. The first cup game saw the visit of Worthing Town to the New Cuthbury, their opponents travelled with a limited squad due to several players being unavailable (probs down the beach if any sense!). The weather….well it was hot, like hottest day of the year hot!

The team settled well, all girls seemed comfortable with ball at feet and before the sweat glands had fully opened Emilia bagged her first, and the team’s first goal of the season on 5 minutes, Carly the instigator and Emilia striking just under the crossbar from 20yards (1-0). With the bit between her teeth she struck her second with only 10 minutes played (2-0). Megan entered proceedings with 15 mins on the clock, within 5 mins her crisp strike from the edge of the area arrowed into the RH side of the goal leaving the Gk no chance (3-0). Bay’s assist lead to Izzy smashing home (4-0) and Emilie gave Izzy the chance of another with a pass which she gratefully received prior to guiding the ball past a helpless visiting Gk (5-0). The width of the crossbar denied Izzy a hat-trick before Carly left her mark, finishing smartly from just inside the area (6-0). It was left to Olivia to have the final say in the first period with a superbly struck effort into the top corner of the goal (7-0). HT 7-0 Even with the mid-half drinks break, both teams seemed pleased to hear the half time whistle. For Wimborne, the emphasis was on keeping heads, keeping shape and keeping a clean sheet. The visiting team looked to stem the flow of attacks and take something from the game and to be fair came out stronger and more determined in the second period. With 60 minutes almost on the clock Izzy’s goal bound shot was palmed away by the Worthing Gk, unfortunately it was palmed away to one of the most powerful left legs in the south of England and Emilia duly despatched the ball into the roof of the net for a deserved hat-trick (8-0). Izzy looked keen for a three goal haul also but again saw her strike saved on 72mins, Meg gobbled up the rebound to increase the lead further (9-0). Five minutes from time Emily took the team’s tally into double figures, driving into the penalty box and force the ball past a stand-in goalkeeper that had not given up on a torrid afternoon for her and her team (10-0).

FT: WTFC 10 Worthing Town 0

POM: Maddie (invaluable support play and hard work)

Summary: Although a difficult match to gauge the team overall due to different levels of ability between the two sides the girls did everything asked of them. On a surreal, baking hot day the team made the football do the running, passing their way through the pitch, creating plenty whilst limiting the visitors to a solitary shot on target that Esme fielded well. It must be said that although our more forward players caused havoc today, the defence laid the foundations, a combination of Charlotte, Rhianna, Eva, Sophie, Maddie, Lila and Lily all working tirelessly aided by CDMs Laila and Jess, all playing their part to nail the first clean sheet of the season. Great to see all our new players settling in so quickly also! Well done ladies! ????????????
