ASBT was founded in 1960 by a group of students and young professionals in Tulear. The team's name is an acronym for Association Sportive des Batignolles Tulear.
ASBT quickly became one of the leading teams in the Malagasy Second Division. The team won its first championship in 1999 and followed that up with another title in 2014.
ASBT has also been successful in the Malagasy Cup. The team reached the final of the competition in 1999, 2000, and 2014, but lost on each occasion.
