NK Maribor

Nogometni klub Maribor (English: Maribor Football Club) is a Slovenian professional football club based in Maribor, Slovenia. It competes in the Slovenian PrvaLiga, the top tier of the Slovenian football league system.

Maribor was founded in 1960 and has won a record 16 Slovenian PrvaLiga titles, 9 Slovenian Cups and 4 Slovenian Supercups. The club is the only Slovenian club that has reached the group stages of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League.

Maribor's home stadium is the Ljudski Vrt Stadium, which has a capacity of 12,435. The club's main rivals are NK Olimpija Ljubljana, with whom they contest the Eternal derby.

History

Maribor was founded on 12 December 1960 by officials and players of NK Branik Maribor, a club that folded a few months earlier. The club's first president was Srecko Koren, and its first head coach was Andrija Pflander.

Maribor won the Slovenian Republic League (third tier in Yugoslavia) in their first season, and qualified for the 1961–62 Yugoslav Second League through the play-offs. The club remained in the Yugoslav Second League until 1971, when they were promoted to the Yugoslav First League.

Maribor spent the next 20 years in the Yugoslav First League, finishing as high as third place in 1976–77. The club also won the Slovenian Cup in 1972 and 1977.

After the breakup of Yugoslavia in 1991, Maribor joined the Slovenian PrvaLiga. The club has won the league title a record 16 times, the Slovenian Cup 9 times and the Slovenian Supercup 4 times.

Maribor has also reached the group stages of the UEFA Champions League twice, in 1999–2000 and 2014–15. The club has also reached the group stages of the UEFA Europa League six times.
