Introduction
Olympique Lyonnais (OL) is a French professional football club based in Lyon in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. The men play in France's highest football division, Ligue 1. Founded in 1950, the club won its first Ligue 1 championship in 2002, starting a national record-setting streak of seven successive titles. Lyon has also won eight Trophées des Champions, five Coupes de France, and three Ligue 2 titles.
History
Olympique Lyonnais was founded in 1950 by the merger of two local clubs, Lyon Olympique Universitaire and Sporting Club de Lyon. The club's first major success came in 1964, when it won the Coupe de France. Lyon won its first Ligue 1 title in 2002, and went on to win seven consecutive titles between 2002 and 2008. The club has also won the Trophée des Champions eight times, and the Coupe de France five times.
Lyon's most successful period came under the ownership of Jean-Michel Aulas, who took over the club in 1987. Aulas transformed the club into a major force in French football, and built a team that included players such as Juninho Pernambucano, Karim Benzema, and Alexandre Lacazette.
Stadium
Lyon's home stadium is the Parc des Princes, which has a capacity of 48,712. The stadium was built in 1972, and has been the home of Lyon since 1984.
