Richmond Town FC was founded in 1945 by a group of local businessmen and footballers. The club initially played in the Richmond and District League, before joining the Wearside League in 1981.
The club's most successful period came in the 1980s, when they won the Wearside League championship three times (1983, 1984, and 1987). They also reached the final of the Northern FA Challenge Cup in 1984, but lost to Whitley Bay.
