Varteig IL has a long history of playing football. The club was founded in 1912 and has played in the Norwegian top flight on two occasions, in 1956 and 1957.
The club's most famous player is probably Thore Haugen, who played for Varteig IL from 1955 to 1962. Haugen went on to play for Fredrikstad FK and the Norwegian national team.
Varteig IL has also produced a number of other talented players, including Svein Mathisen, who played for Rosenborg BK and the Norwegian national team, and Geir Fugløy, who played for Vålerenga IF and the Norwegian national team.
