Whitburn Athletic Football Club were founded in 2010 by current player, Andy Smith. After spending 3 years in the Wearside Combination League, previously named FC Whitburn, the club now play its trade in the reputable Northern Football Alliance League, founded in 1890.

The Northern Football Alliance is a football competition based in the North East of England and Cumbria. It has three divisions headed by the Premier Division, which sits at Step 7 (or level 11) of the National League System.

The club have always encouraged the integration of local lads, despite being called Whitburn the team actually play in South Shields where a large content of the current squad live.

The Club appointed Ryan Shave full time manager as of the 16/17 season after initially joining the management set up in the 15/16 season. With all aspects continuing to progress at an encouraging pace, the club has a primary ambition to be in the NFAL Premier Division by 2020.
