My biggest problem with reviews of online casinos and betting platforms is their reliability. I am sure you have read a few reviews that have smelled fishier than a week-old tuna sandwich, haven’t you? Don’t get me wrong; honest reviews have tremendous value, but you must be careful with what you believe.

I am sure you have read reviews for the same establishment that are poles apart- one praising it to no end while the other blasting it mercilessly. The best way I found to deal with this is to take every review I read with a pinch of salt!

The right way to read reviews

When I am scoping a new casino site, I dive right into what other people are saying. You get some really useful info on how cool the games are, how good the customer service is, and whether the whole operation is legit. Plus, when I am comparing sites, I value the first-hand experiences of reviewers.

But here is a genuine problem I face almost on every platform—fake reviews. I have read glowing recommendations and scathing criticisms that are as fake as they can be. And don’t get me started on those sponsored reviews that dress up as the real deal but are just poorly disguised ads.

So, how do you tell fake reviews from the legit ones? I have found that reviews that go into the nitty-gritty details are more trustworthy than superficial one- or two-line comments. I also find too much fluff or raging rants a huge red flag when it comes to the reliability of any review. If I read several reviews singing the same tune, I tend to put a little more stock in what they are saying.

Who to trust?

With nearly 50% of internet users posting reviews every month, I know how difficult it is to weed out the field. While I won’t tell you to trust anyone blindly, I think folks who know the industry inside out and dig deep in their reviews are more credible. I like reviews that are not just about the gameplay but look at everything from the licenses to how good the security is.

Here is how I go about it:

Look for verified users: I look for reviews that carry tags like “verified purchase” or “confirmed player”. For a review to be worth my time, it better come from a genuine user of the platform.

  • Regulatory approval: I always check if reviewers mention whether the site is regulated by a respected authority like the UK Gambling Commission. This gives me more reason to give the review a chance.

  • Consistent voices: I look for reviewers who consistently contribute on various platforms and opine about games and other aspects. If they have a history of balanced and thoughtful reviews, I am more inclined to believe in what they have to say.

  • Cross-check sites: I recommend hopping around and comparing what is said on different sites and platforms. If there is a consensus forming, it’s a good sign; if the opinions vary wildly, I know there is a reason to be doubtful.

In my opinion, taking the reviews as a part of the bigger picture is the way to go. Yes, it is essential to read them, but you should look at other things as well.

The timing of a review matters

I also check the date a review was written. Reviews written recently reflect the platform's current status. I remember this one gaming site that initially received a lot of negative reviews. Every review I read was nothing but complaints about the slow payouts and less-than-helpful customer service. Guess what the establishment did? They took the reviews as a wake-up call and turned things around.

Just a few months later, when I read the reviews again, I saw a drastic change in what they were saying. I saw players praising the improvements and the streamlined customer service.

What I want to point out here is that even if you read a negative review of a site today, things can change in the future. So, I would recommend reading the latest reviews rather than going back in time too far.

So, what’s the bottom line?

Should you take reviews with a pinch of salt? Heck, yes! I see reviews as a piece of the puzzle but not the whole picture. I have learnt that doing my homework and keeping my eyes open is the best way to avoid duds and find those hidden gems that make it all worthwhile.

Never forget that reviews are subjective and will reflect experiences and biases. I recommend being pragmatic when reading them, doing your research, and cross-referencing them with other sources. Don’t just take one person’s word for it; look at the big picture before rolling your dice!
