The Hightown Amateur Football League was founded in 1900 by a group of local football enthusiasts. The league initially consisted of just 8 teams, but it has grown steadily over the years and now has 16 teams.

The league has been home to some notable players over the years, including Stephen Smith, who is considered to be the world's first football superstar. Smith played for Hightown Town in the early 1900s and helped the team win the league championship on several occasions.
