Kerala Premier League

The Kerala Premier League (KPL) is a state-level football league organized by the Kerala Football Association and played in the state of Kerala, India.

The league was founded in 1998 and is currently sponsored by Scoreline. It is contested by 14 teams, divided into two groups of seven. The top two teams from each group qualify for the semifinals, with the winners of the semifinals playing in the final.

History

The Kerala Premier League was founded in 1998 as the Kerala Football League. The league was rebranded as the Kerala Premier League in 2013.

The first season of the Kerala Premier League was won by Vasco SC. The most successful team in the history of the league is Gokulam Kerala FC, who have won the title eight times.

Format

The Kerala Premier League is a league system with two divisions: the Premier Division and the First Division. The Premier Division is the top division and is contested by 14 teams. The First Division is the second division and is contested by 12 teams.

The teams in the Premier Division play each other twice, once at home and once away. The top two teams in the Premier Division qualify for the I-League, the top tier of Indian football. The bottom two teams in the Premier Division are relegated to the First Division.

The teams in the First Division play each other once, home or away. The top two teams in the First Division are promoted to the Premier Division. The bottom two teams in the First Division are relegated to the Second Division.
